- The tiny superfood – Six reasons to bring millets to the market!
(FAO)– We may be small, but we are strong. We grow where others cannot. We nurture soils and ecosystems, and we provide nutrition for all. What are we? Millets! Millets encompass a diverse group of small-grained, dryland cereals including foxtail, barnyard and fonio, among others. As whole grains, millets are a good source of essential nutrients. Millets are primarily grown in Asia and Africa, with India being the top producer followed by Nigeria, Niger and China. They were among the first plants to be domesticated and still serve as a traditional staple crop in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. These crops, rooted in ancient cultures and ancestral traditions, have long survived harsh growing conditions. Their climate resilience and adaptability offer opportunities for strengthening food security and bolstering economic growth. In celebration of the International Year of Millets 2023, FAO is collaborating with partners to unlock the great potential of millets as affordable foods that can contribute to healthy diets and a healthy environment. Here are six key reasons why millets deserve our attention and a place on our tables: 1. Millets are there when others are not. There is an ever-growing global population that needs sufficient and healthy food amidst climate emergencies and depleting natural resources. Millets can be part of the solution. These grains can survive harsh climate conditions, offering solutions to food scarcity. Because they are often the only crops that can be harvested in dry seasons, millets can be a vital food source for populations vulnerable to food insecurity. 2. Millets can contribute to a healthy diet. Millets provide antioxidants, minerals and protein. As whole grains, each millet variety also offers different types and amounts of fibre, which play a role in regulating bowel function, blood sugar and lipids. Furthermore, millets are gluten-free with a low-glycaemic index making them a great food option for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, high-blood sugar or diabetes. They can also be a cost-effective source of iron. Incorporating millets in our diets can provide us with nutritious and healthy alternatives to the usual refined grains in the global market. Start exploring some millet recipes, such as this finger millet pancakes option, to revamp your diet! 3. Millets are climate-resilient. Millets are resistant to drought and tolerant to crop diseases and pests, allowing them to survive in adverse climatic conditions. Because millets can be grown with minimal inputs and maintenance and can adapt to climate shocks, expanding production of millets can transform local agrifood systems to be more efficient, resilient and inclusive. The ability of millets to grow in poor, degraded soils can also provide land cover in arid areas, reducing soil degradation and supporting biodiversity. 4. Millets offer promising livelihood opportunities for small-scale farmers. As other cereals have become widespread, dietary preferences have shifted and led to a decline in the production and demand for millets. By encouraging the consumption and production of these underutilized crops, we can help millets regain market share and create additional opportunities for small-scale farmers. 5. Millets’ trade can improve the diversity of the global food system. Currently, millets account for less than three percent of the global grains trade. When sudden shocks affect the foodgrain market, millets can provide a valuable alternative to typically traded grains. This added diversity can improve the resilience of the global trade markets and mitigate our reliance on other grains. 6. Millets can be used in many innovative ways. The genetic diversity of millets lends itself to many diverse and innovate applications of millets in areas such as therapeutics and pharmaceuticals. Used innovatively, millets offer even greater market opportunities for regional and international trade.
- NASA is Bringing Mars Rock Samples Back to Earth
NASA announced on January 23, 2023 (Thursday) its new Mars Sample Receiving Project office will be located at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The safe and rapid release of Mars samples after they return to Earth to laboratories worldwide for science investigations will be a priority. Animation is contributed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the European Space Agency, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Marshall Space Flight Center. The office will reside within Johnson’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science division, NASA’s organization with expertise in processing and curating extraterrestrial samples. “NASA Johnson houses the largest and most diverse collection of astromaterials in the world, beginning with samples returned from the Apollo Program,” said Johnson Center Director Vanessa Wyche. “With our expertise, we look forward to managing the project that will receive scientifically compelling Mars samples gathered by the NASA Perseverance rover.” Johnson will work with the agency’s Mars Exploration Program to develop and design plans for sample recovery and subsequent transition to science investigations. The project team will recover, contain, transfer, assess safety, curate, and coordinate scientific investigation of the samples collected by NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, which are expected to arrive on Earth in 2033. Samples returned to Earth will enhance humanity’s understanding of Mars through detailed chemical and physical analyses in laboratories around the world that are beyond the capabilities of instruments delivered to Mars. Perseverance is gathering samples in and around Jezero Crater, where billions of years ago, a river once flowed into a lake and deposited rocks and sediments in a fan shaped delta formation. Deltas are one of the best places on Mars to search for potential signs of ancient microbial life. “Age-old samples, like those being collected on Mars, are critical in our quest to better understand our universe,” said Rep. Brian Babin of Texas. “I’m proud Johnson will lead NASA’s effort in curating these samples and play a key role in propelling our scientific discoveries forward.” A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including caching samples that may contain signs of ancient microbial life. The rover is currently characterizing the planet’s geology and past climate, paving the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and is the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith. “The Mars Sample Return Program is essential for the human exploration of Mars,” said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas. “Establishing this Sample Receiving Project office is a large step forward in helping us gain knowledge and make progress in our efforts to go to Mars.” “Johnson will work with the agency’s Mars Exploration Program and ESA to complete studies and develop plans for sample recovery and transportation, facility development and operation, and science investigations,” says Gerhard Kminek, ESA’s MSR lead scientist. More Information about Mars Samples Returning samples to Earth from Mars is expected to be the most complex robotic space flight campaign ever attempted. The NASA-European Space Agency (ESA) Mars Sample Return Campaign promises to revolutionize humanity’s understanding of Mars by bringing scientifically selected samples to Earth for study using the most sophisticated instruments around the world. The campaign would fulfill a solar system exploration goal, a high priority since the 1970s and in the last three National Academy of Sciences Planetary Decadal Surveys. This strategic NASA and ESA partnership would be the first mission to return scientifically selected samples from another planet and the first launch from the surface of another planet. The samples collected by NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover during its exploration of an ancient lakebed are thought to present the best opportunity to reveal clues about the early evolution of Mars, including the potential for past life. - 5 billion people unprotected from trans fat-induced heart disease
GENEVA, 23 January 2023 — Five billion people globally remain unprotected from harmful trans fat, a new status report from the World Health Organization (WHO) has found, increasing their risk of heart disease and death. Example of common food rich in trans fat: 🥐🍿 🍗 🍔 🍟 🌭 🧈 🍦🍰 🍩 Since WHO first called for the global elimination of industrially produced trans fat in 2018 — with an elimination target set for 2023 — population coverage of best-practice policies has increased almost six-fold. Forty three countries have now implemented best-practice policies for tackling trans fat in food, with 2.8 billion people protected globally. Despite substantial progress, however, this still leaves 5 billion worldwide at risk from trans fat’s devastating health impacts with the global goal for its total elimination in 2023 remaining unattainable at this time. Industrially produced trans fat (also called industrially produced trans-fatty acids) is commonly found in packaged foods, baked goods, cooking oils and spreads. Trans fat intake is responsible for up to 500 000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year around the world. “Trans fat has no known benefit, and huge health risks that incur huge costs for health systems,” said WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, “By contrast, eliminating trans fat is cost effective and has enormous benefits for health. Put simply, trans fat is a toxic chemical that kills, and should have no place in food. It’s time to get rid of it once and for all.” Currently, 9 of the 16 countries with the highest estimated proportion of coronary heart disease deaths caused by trans fat intake do not have a best-practice policy. They are Australia, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Ecuador, Egypt, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and Republic of Korea. Best-practices in trans fat elimination policies follow specific criteria established by WHO and limit industrially produced trans fat in all settings. There are two best-practice policy alternatives: 1) mandatory national limit of 2 grams of industrially produced trans fat per 100 grams of total fat in all foods; and 2) mandatory national ban on the production or use of partially hydrogenated oils (a major source of trans fat) as an ingredient in all foods. “Progress in eliminating trans fat is at risk of stalling, and trans fat continues to kill people,” said Dr Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives. “Every government can stop these preventable deaths by passing a best-practice policy now. The days of trans fat killing people are numbered — but governments must act to end this preventable tragedy.” While most trans fat elimination policies to date have been implemented in higher-income countries (largely in the Americas and in Europe), an increasing number of middle-income countries are implementing or adopting these policies, including Argentina, Bangladesh, India, Paraguay, the Philippines and Ukraine. Best-practice policies are also being considered in Mexico, Nigeria and Sri Lanka in 2023. If passed, Nigeria would be the second and most populous country in Africa to put a best-practice trans fat elimination policy in place. No low-income countries have yet adopted a best-practice policy to eliminate trans fat. In 2023, WHO recommends that countries focus on these four areas: adopting best-practice policy , monitoring and surveillance, healthy oil replacements and advocacy. WHO guidance has been developed to help countries make rapid advances in these areas. WHO also encourages food manufacturers to eliminate industrially produced trans fat from their products, aligning to the commitment made by the International Food and Beverage Alliance (IFBA). Major suppliers of oils and fats are asked to remove industrially produced trans fat from the products sold to food manufacturers globally. The report, called “ Countdown to 2023 – WHO report on global trans fat elimination 2022 “, is an annual status report published by WHO in collaboration with Resolve to Save Lives, to track progress towards the goal of trans fat elimination in 2023. #health
- Don’t do these 5 things in SEO backlink building
SEO backlink building is an essential part of any successful digital marketing strategy. But with the ever-changing landscape of SEO, it can be difficult to determine which tactics will work and which ones won’t. While there are countless strategies for SEO backlink building, there are also certain tactics that should be avoided at all costs. Let’s get into the DOs and DON’Ts of SEO backlink building. What is backlink building? SEO backlink building is the process of acquiring links from other websites to your own. This is done in order to improve your site’s ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs). The higher your site ranks, the more likely people are to find it. Backlinks are an important part of SEO because they show search engines that your site is popular and relevant. There are many different ways to build backlinks. One common method is through guest posting . This involves writing articles for other websites in exchange for a link back to your own site. Another method is through directory submissions , where you submit your site to online directories. Directory listings usually include a link back to the submitted website. Building backlinks can be a time-consuming process, but it’s important to make sure that you acquire high-quality links from reputable sites. Links from low-quality or spammy sites can actually harm your site’s ranking. So, focus on building relationships with other website owners and providing quality content that others will want to link to. The 5 things to avoid in backlink building There are a lot of things to avoid when building backlinks, but here are the top five of what NOT to do: 1. Don’t use black hat techniques. This includes anything that could be considered manipulative or deceptive, such as link farms, article spinning, and keyword stuffing. These are considered low-quality links, they do more harm than help. 2. Don’t buy links. This is a surefire way to get penalized by Google. If you want to improve your link profile, earn links through high-quality content and outreach. 3. Don’t participate in link schemes. These are basically any type of exchange where you agree to link to someone else in return for them linking to you. Google has cracked down on these in recent years, so it’s best to avoid them altogether. 4. Don’t use exact match anchor text. This is when you include a target keyword in your anchor text (the text that links to your site), which can come across as spammy to search engines. Instead, use natural phrases or even just your website’s URL. 5. Don’t overdo it with reciprocal linking. While there’s nothing wrong with exchanging links with other websites, don’t go overboard and link to every site that asks. Quality trumps quantity when it comes to backlinks! How to build quality backlinks There are a few things to avoid when building backlinks if you want to maintain a high quality link profile. Here are a few of the most common mistakes: 1. Don’t buy links. This is a surefire way to get penalized by Google. If you’re caught, your site could be removed from search entirely. 2. Don’t participate in link schemes. These are networks of sites that link to each other in an attempt to manipulate search rankings. Google can easily identify these schemes and will penalize participating sites. 3. Don’t use auto-generated content or links. These are often created by scripts and can be identified by Google as low-quality, spammy content. Sites that use these techniques will be penalized accordingly. 4. Don’t use private blog networks (PBNs). These are networks of sites that are used primarily for the purpose of link building. They’re often easy to identify and can result in severe penalties from Google. 5. Avoid using exact match anchor text. This is when the anchor text (the text used for the link) is an exact match for the keyword you’re targeting. Google has stated that this is against their guidelines and can result in a penalty for your site #SEO
- How to Optimize Your Website to comply New Google Algorithm
Are you looking to optimize your website to comply with the new Google algorithm? With so many factors that influence SEO, it can be difficult to know what steps are necessary to ensure improved ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs). Luckily, there are certain steps you can take to make sure your website is up-to-date with the latest Google algorithm. Let’s show you how to do just that by covering topics such as keyword optimization, content quality, and link building. What is Google’s new algorithm? Google’s new algorithm, which is set to go into effect in 2021, is designed to penalize websites that are not mobile-friendly. This means that if your website is not optimized for mobile devices, it will rank lower in Google search results. To avoid this penalty, you need to make sure your website is responsive and easy to use on all devices. Here are some tips on how to optimize your website for the new Google algorithm: 1. Use a responsive design: A responsive design ensures that your website looks and works great on all devices, from desktop computers to smartphones. 2. Simplify your layout: Keep your layout simple and easy to navigate, so users can find what they’re looking for quickly and easily. 3. Use large font sizes: Make sure your text is easy to read on all devices by using large font sizes. 4. Optimize your images: Compress your images so they load quickly on all devices. 5. Minimize pop-ups: Avoid using intrusive pop-ups that can interfere with the user experience on mobile devices. What are the key changes? The new Google algorithm is designed to promote websites that are mobile-friendly and provide a good user experience. To comply with the new algorithm, website owners need to make sure their website is optimized for mobile devices and provides a good user experience. Some of the key changes that website owners need to make include: • Ensuring their website is responsive and functions well on all devices, including mobile phones and tablets. • Creating content that is easy to read and navigate, with clear headings and subheadings. • Making sure all images on the website are properly sized and optimised for fast loading times. • Avoiding pop-ups and other intrusive advertising that can interfere with the user experience. How to optimize your website for the new algorithm As Google continues to roll out its mobile-first index, it’s more important than ever to make sure your website is optimized for the new algorithm. Here are some tips on how to do just that: 1. Make sure your site is responsive. This means that it should resize and adjust itself to fit any screen size, from desktop down to smartphone. If your site isn’t responsive, Google will likely penalize you in the search rankings. 2. Use Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). AMP is a Google-backed project that essentially creates lightweight versions of web pages specifically for mobile devices. Not only will using AMP help your pages load faster on mobile devices, but it will also improve your chances of appearing in Google’s “Top Stories” carousel. 3. Optimize your images. Images are often the biggest culprit when it comes to slow page loading times. Make sure all of your images are properly compressed and sized for the web. A good rule of thumb is to keep them under 100kb each. 4. Minimize third-party scripts. If you’re using a lot of external scripts, such as social media widgets or analytics tracking code, consider making some changes so that they load less frequently or asynchronously (meaning they don’t block the rest of the page from loading). 5 . Use a content delivery network (CDN). A CDN can help speed up the delivery of your website’s static content, Algorithm changes, but good content will always win Google’s algorithm is constantly changing, and that can be frustrating for website owners who are trying to optimize their site for better search engine ranking. However, it’s important to remember that while the algorithm may change, good content will always be the key to success in SEO. So how can you make sure your content is up to par? Here are a few tips: 1. Write for your audience first and foremost. When you write content that is interesting and relevant to your target audience, they will be more likely to engage with it and share it with others. This will help improve your search engine ranking organically. 2. Keep your content fresh. Google loves new content, so make sure to regularly add new blog posts, articles, etc. to your website. This will keep people coming back for more, and it will also help you rank higher in search results. 3. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly. With more and more people using mobile devices to access the internet, it’s imperative that your website is optimized for these users. Google favors sites that are mobile-friendly, so this is another area where you can improve your ranking. 4. Use relevant keywords throughout your site. Keywords are still an important part of SEO, so make sure to use them judiciously throughout your website in titles, headings, meta tags, etc. This will help Google understand what your site is about and how it should be categorized in search #SEO
- Survey of over 2,000 adults identifies pitfalls of science communication
It isn’t what you know, it’s what you think you know The study found that people with strong attitudes towards science tend to be overconfident about their level of understanding. The team suggests that addressing the discrepancies between what people know and what they believe they know may be a better strategy for science communication. TL;DR Summary Why do people hold highly variable attitudes towards well-evidenced science? For many years researchers focused on what people know about science, thinking that “to know science is to love it”. But do people who think they know science actually know science? A new study publishing January 24th in the open access journal PLOS Biology by Cristina Fonseca of the Genetics Society, UK; Laurence Hurst of the Milner Centre for Evolution, University of Bath, UK; and colleagues, finds that people with strong attitudes tend to believe they understand science, while neutrals are less confident. Overall, the study revealed that that people with strong negative attitudes to science tend to be overconfident about their level of understanding. Whether it be vaccines, climate change or GM foods, societally important science can evoke strong and opposing attitudes. Understanding how to communicate science requires an understanding of why people may hold such extremely different attitudes to the same underlying science. The new study performed a survey of over 2,000 UK adults, asking them both about their attitudes to science and their belief in their own understanding. A few prior analyses found that individuals that are negative towards science tend to have relatively low textbook knowledge but strong self-belief in their understanding. With this insight as foundational, the team sought to ask whether strong self-belief underpinned all strong attitudes. The team focused on genetic science and asked attitudinal questions, such as: “Many claims about the benefits of modern genetic science are greatly exaggerated.” People could say how much they agreed or disagreed with such a statement. They also asked questions about how much they believe they understand about such science, including: “When you hear the term DNA, how would you rate your understanding of what the term means.” All individuals were scored from zero (they know they have no understanding) to one (they are confident they understand). The team discovered that those at the attitudinal extremes – both strongly supportive and strongly anti-science – have very high self-belief in their own understanding, while those answering neutrally do not. Psychologically, the team suggest, this makes sense: to hold a strong opinion you need to strongly believe in the correctness of your understanding of the basic facts. The current team could replicate the prior results finding that those most negative tend also not to have high textbook knowledge. By contrast, those more accepting of science both believe they understand it and scored well on the textbook fact (true/false) questions. When it was thought that what mattered most for scientific literacy was scientific knowledge, science communication focused on passing information from scientists to the public. However, this approach may not be successful, and in some cases can backfire. The present work suggests that working to address the discrepancies between what people know and what they believe they know may be a better strategy. Professor Anne Ferguson-Smith, President of the Genetics Society and co-author of the study comments, “Confronting negative attitudes towards science held by some people will likely involve deconstructing what they think they know about science and replacing it with more accurate understanding. This is quite challenging.” Hurst concludes, “Why do some people hold strong attitudes to science whilst others are more neutral? We find that strong attitudes, both for and against, are underpinned by strong self confidence in knowledge about science.” Source: PLOS Biology Citation: Fonseca C, Pettitt J, Woollard A, Rutherford A, Bickmore W, Ferguson-Smith A, et al. - Features of sleeping music from Analysis of 200,000 tracks
Wanna fall asleep fast? Some researcher has done a great job at exploring the features of music that people fall asleep to from the analysis of more than 200,000 Spotify tracks reveals commonalities and diversity in sleep music . Many people say that they listen to music to help them fall asleep, raising the question of whether music chosen for this purpose shares certain universal characteristics. However, research on the characteristics of sleep music is limited, and prior studies have tended to be relatively small. A new study has identified several characteristics typical of music associated with sleep, such as being quieter and slower than other music. However, popular sleep music playlists on Spotify also include faster, louder, and more energetic tracks. Rebecca Jane Scarratt of Aarhus University, Denmark, and colleagues present these findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on January 18, 2023. To better understand the characteristics of sleep music, Scarratt and colleagues analyzed 225,626 tracks from 985 playlists on Spotify that are associated with sleep. They used Spotify’s API to compare the audio features of the sleep tracks to audio features of music from a dataset representing music in general. This analysis showed that sleep music tends to be quieter and slower than other music. It also more often lacks lyrics and more often features acoustic instruments. However, despite these trends, the researchers found considerable diversity in the musical features of sleep music, identifying six distinct sub-categories. Three of the sub-categories, including ambient music, align with the typical characteristics identified for sleep music. However, music in the other three subcategories was louder and had a higher degree of energy than average sleep music. These tracks included several popular songs, including “Dynamite” by the band BTS, and “lovely (with Khalid)” by Billie Eilish and Khalid. The authors speculate that, despite their higher energy, popular songs could potentially aid relaxation and sleep for some people through their familiarity. However, more research will be needed to explore this possibility and identify the various reasons different people choose different music for sleeping. Overall, this study suggests that there is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to the music people choose for sleep. The findings could help inform future development of music-based strategies to help people sleep. The authors add: “In this study, we investigated the characteristics of music used for sleep and found that even though sleep music in general is softer, slower, instrumental and more often played on acoustic instruments than other music, the music people use for sleep displays a large variation including music characterized by high energy and tempo. The study can both inform the clinical use of music and advance our understanding of how music is used to regulate human behavior in everyday life.” Source : PLOS ONE Citation: Scarratt RJ, Heggli OA, Vuust P, Jespersen KV (2023) The audio features of sleep music: Universal and subgroup characteristics. - Not a Science fiction: A tool to detect higher-order phenomena in real-world data
Many phenomena – brain signals, stock prices, or COVID hospitalizations, for example – can be studied using time series data, which are collected as repeated measurements over a given time interval. Most tools for interpreting such data rely on what is known as pairwise statistics, which takes into account the interaction between two variables. But in the real world, events are often dependent on more than just two variables. “Imagine a conversation in a pub between two people versus three or four, or imagine the interactions between a couple versus a couple with a child; the dynamics change completely the more variables you add,” explains Enrico Amico of the Medical Image Processing Lab ( MIP:Lab ). Amico is currently an SNSF Ambizione scholar hosted by the lab, which is run jointly between EPFL’s School of Engineering and the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine. “As a computational neuroscientist, I know that neuronal activity is coordinated by many different parts of the brain, but when I collect brain data, I am only able to analyze time series data related to pairs of network nodes; I cannot analyze higher-order (or group) interactions,” he says. Recognizing the need for an improved computational framework for interpreting the complexity of real-world phenomena, Amico and Andrea Santoro of the Neuro-X Institute collaborated with colleagues from Austria’s Central European University and Italy’s CENTAI Institute to create a method for analyzing the higher-order organization of multivariate time series data. Their groundbreaking work has been published in Nature Physics . “Simply put, we developed a method to detect and infer higher-order information from real data. This is part of an exciting new branch of higher-order mathematics with potential applications in many real-world systems, from neuroscience, finance, and epidemiology to medicine, climate science, ecology – anything, really,” Amico says. Revealing multivariate interactions with data ‘Polaroids’ The researchers applied their new methodology to three complex real-world datasets on brain activity, stock price fluctuations, and 20th-century epidemics. Their higher-order approach was able to distinguish major features in each regime that could not be detected by standard pairwise statistics. As Amico puts it, each time series measurement acted as a kind of three-dimensional data “Polaroid”, or snapshot of the spatial configuration of the system under study. For example, in the case of brain activity, the researchers’ multivariate time series method was able to detect oscillations between chaotic and synchronized neural interactions occurring in a brain at rest. Similarly, in the economic example, their method was better able to distinguish between periods of financial stability and crisis. In the epidemiological example, the researchers were even able to detect interactions between the spread of different diseases, like flu and pertussis. “You might imagine that epidemics spread independently, but with our approach, we were able to classify different diseases with better accuracy, and even see how the spread of one interacted with the spread of another.” Computing power and creativity is key Amico explains that the reason multivariate computations have not previously been attempted is largely down to recent advances in computing power. While the concept of multivariate time series analysis is simple enough, it is much easier said than done, as the complexity of the mathematical modelling grows exponentially with each added variable. “We are able to use ancient mathematics in new ways thanks to modern computing power, and access to big data. Computing power is key – and so is creativity. We are creating a new mathematics, and creative thinking is important for tackling these issues.” So, when it comes to the number of variables that can be analyzed concurrently, is the sky the limit? In theory perhaps, but in practice, no. “In our paper, we focused on three variables. I think that five would likely reach the limits of today’s maximum computing power,” Amico says. - 3 Tips on How to spot an AI-generated article
Artificial Intelligence has been a discussion for a decade, and following the release of GPT-3, the spotlight of AI-generated content once again captures the media headlines. There is no doubt that as technology evolves, it has changed how we communicate, interact, and consume information. AI-generated content, be it articles, audio, or videos, is becoming increasingly prevalent across the internet—and it can be difficult to spot the difference between AI-generated and human-written content. Will Google punish AI-generated articles? Google has been clear in its stance on AI-generated content. In a blog post from 2017, Google’s Danny Sullivan wrote: “We’re against using artificial intelligence to generate gibberish for websites. We’ve always penalized sites with shallow or meaningless content, and that action continues.” In addition, Google has recently cracked down on low-quality guest posts, which is another form of AI-generated content, where guest writers are paid to write articles that are then published on other sites. These articles are often poorly written and lacking in substance. However, Google’s redline is about low-quality content; If you can generate high quality content with editorial proofreading, it might be a great assistant to create content. There are some key factors to consider when trying to determine whether or not an article was written by an AI program. Let’s explore three tips that will help you spot an AI-generated article. An AI-generated article often has repetitions of the same idea When you’re reading an article and noticing that it seems to be repeating the same idea over and over again, it’s likely that it was generated by an AI. This is a common tactic used by AI-generated articles to make them appear more human-like. So if you come across an article that seems to be repeating itself, take a closer look to see if there are any other telltale signs that it may have been generated by AI. An AI-generated article could contain many listicles Listicle is a popular content form due to its easy-to-read nature. AIs know that thus they use it a lot, even too much. Sometimes they will generate listicles within listicles! Can someone please tell them that you can have one or a maximum of two sets of listicles in an article? The listicles generated by AI can be a list by numbers and/or by bulletin points. It will probably have a lot of numbered lists, or lists with bullet points. Moreover, the sentences will be short and choppy, without much detail or explanation. An AI-generated article would end with a “Conclusion” paragraph First, read through the article. If it reads like a list of facts with no real narrative flow, there is a high chance of an automatic generated article. Also, I found out that in AI-generated articles, the ending paragraph is always a “CONCLUSION”. I think it is a pattern that AI has learned and why they use it in almost all the articles. So if you see an article with the ending paragraph named “Conclusion”, then it’s probably a brainchild of an AI algorithm. Combination of AI & human content is a win-win The best way to use an AI-generated article is to give it some human touch – combine the AI-generated content with your input and proofreading. Here are some tips on how to do just that: 1. Pay attention to the overall tone and style of the article. AI-generated articles often have a very stilted, formal tone that can be quite off-putting to readers. 2. Check for repetitions. AI-generated articles often contain a lot of the same ideas over and over again, don’t feel bad to delete the whole paragraph if necessary. 3. See if the article makes sense. AI-generated articles sometimes don’t make a lot of sense, so if you’re confused by what you’re reading, it’s probably because it was generated by a machine. The bottom line is to just let your human literacy skill flow! AI should be an assistant, not a master. Edit it the way you like, then this piece of article will become YOUR work instead of AI. - An Introduction to Off-page SEO
SEO is the bread and butter of any digital marketer. It’s the lifeblood that keeps your website ranking high in search engine results pages and driving in profitable traffic. However, SEO is not just about optimizing the content on your website. It also involves off-page elements such as link building, social media influence, and reputation management. We’ll take an in-depth look at off-page SEO and how you can do to improve your website rankings. What is Off-page SEO? Off-page SEO is the process of optimizing a website for higher search engine rankings through the use of external factors. This includes things like link building, social media signals, and brand mentions. One of the most important aspects of off-page SEO is link building. This is the process of acquiring links from other websites back to your own. Links are one of the major ranking factors for search engines, so this is an essential part of any off-page SEO strategy. Social media signals are another important factor in off-page SEO. When people share your content or talk about your brand on social media, it shows search engines that your site is popular and relevant. This can help you rank higher in search results. Brand mentions are also valuable for off-page SEO. If people are talking about your brand online, it shows that you’re a relevant and authoritative source of information. This can help improve your search engine rankings over time. The Different Types of Off-page SEO There are many different types of off-page SEO that can be used to improve the visibility and ranking of a website in search engine results pages (SERPs). The most common and effective techniques include link building, social media marketing, and content marketing. Link building is the process of acquiring links from other websites to your own. This is done by creating high-quality content that other webmasters will want to link to, and by actively seeking out opportunities to get your links included on other relevant websites. The more high-quality inbound links you have, the higher your site will rank in SERPs. Social media marketing involves using social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to promote your website and its contents. This can be done by sharing links to your site’s content on your social media profiles, participating in relevant online conversations, and running targeted social media advertising campaigns. Content marketing is a broad term that refers to any type of marketing that involves creating and sharing content with the goal of promoting a business or website. This can be done through blog posts, infographics, videos, ebooks, etc. Content marketing is an important part of off-page SEO because it helps to build up a library of high-quality content that can be used for link building and social media promotion. Pros and Cons of Off-page SEO Off-page SEO is the practice of optimizing a website for Google search with the goal of earning higher web traffic levels and improving the visibility of the site. The main benefits of off-page SEO are that it can help to improve your website’s ranking in search results, and it can also increase the number of visitors who are exposed to your site. However, there are also some potential drawbacks to consider before implementing an off-page SEO strategy, which include the possibility of being penalized by Google and the potential for decreased organic reach. What are the best Off-page SEO techniques? Off-page SEO techniques are those that are used to improve the ranking of a website on search engine results pages (SERPs). The most common and effective off-page SEO technique is link building, which is the process of acquiring links from other websites. Other off-page SEO techniques include social media marketing, directory submission, and article marketing. How to measure the success of your Off-page SEO efforts Off-page SEO is all about getting your website noticed and ranked by search engines. This can be done through a variety of means, such as link building, social media engagement, and even creating informative blog content. But how do you know if your off-page SEO efforts are actually paying off? Here are a few metrics you can use to measure the success of your off-page SEO strategy: 1. Search Engine Rankings One of the most obvious ways to gauge the success of your off-page SEO efforts is by tracking your website’s search engine rankings. Use a tool like Google Analytics to track where your website ranks for relevant keywords. If you see an uptick in rankings after implementing an off-page SEO strategy, that’s a good sign that it’s working. 2. Traffic Levels Another way to measure the success of your off-page SEO is by looking at traffic levels to your website. Again, Google Analytics can be helpful here. If you see an increase in organic traffic after implementing an off-page SEO strategy, that means it’s working and people are finding your website through search engines. 3. Social Media Engagement If you’re using social media as part of your off-page SEO strategy, then you should also be tracking social media engagement metrics. This could include things like the number of likes/shares/comments on your posts, or new followers gained over time. If you see increased engagement after implementing an off-page SEO strategy, it’s a good sign that your efforts are paying off. By tracking these metrics, you can get a better sense of how successful your off-page SEO efforts are, and then adjust as needed.

- Crypto Winter or a blessing in disguise for the future of blockchain technology?
Every cloud has a silver lining. So whether or not the sun sets on cryptocurrencies, its underlying technology, blockchain, has a bright future beyond just coins. By TOM CASSAUWERS Sam Bankman-Fried was the darling of the cryptocurrency world, then he became its black sheep. In November of this year, the cryptocurrency company he founded, Futures Exchange (known widely as FTX), collapsed in a spectacular way. The exchange, a digital platform where users can buy and sell cryptocurrencies, filed for bankruptcy after allegedly mishandling customer funds. Bankman-Fried had previously been well-liked by investors and media, which applauded his generous donations to charity and for calling out unethical practices in the industry. The bankruptcy destroyed that image. The collapse also came on the heels of a massive crash of cryptocurrency prices, and the failure of several big players in the industry. Behind this crash and claims of fraud, companies remain surprisingly optimistic about the potential of blockchain. One of those is Motoblockchain, a small start-up from Malaga, Spain. They created a system where all the relevant information about a motorcycle (its parts, usage and repairs) can be stored on a blockchain. Everyone, from mechanics to riders wanting to buy a second-hand bike, can access the records in this system to verify the origin and history of a motorcycle. ‘Having a trustworthy way to show the provenance of a product, or its parts, is really important in a lot of industries,’ said João Fernandes, analyst at the Portuguese investment fund Bright Pixel Capital, which supported Motoblockchain through the EU-funded project BlockStart. ‘It’s also something blockchain excels at. It gives an extra layer of credibility to information in an ecosystem.’ This trust is one of the many advantages that blockchain technology might offer the European economy. It is keeping start-ups like Motoblockchain hopeful about blockchain despite the spectacular boom and bust cycles of crypto. Stimulating their growth, and convincing European companies to use the technology, might be crucial for the long-term success of blockchain. “ Blockchain shines when there are multiple different stakeholders that need to access the same system and share information in a decentralized way. Robert Richter ‘The impact of blockchain will only be fully fulfilled if we convince SMEs to use it,’ said Fernandes. ‘Over 90% of the economy is composed of these businesses. And plenty of those companies can really benefit from using blockchain-based technologies.’ No intermediary Blockchain allows cryptocurrencies to digitally register transactions without one party controlling the currency. In contrast to regular databases, which are generally controlled by one party, it’s decentralised. What’s most important is that blockchain technology (distributed ledgers) can be used to record anything of value without an intermediary – not only financial transactions. This is a concept with applications far beyond cryptocurrency. For example, it is useful to track the history of a motorcycle, as Motoblockchain does. The motorcycle might pass through dozens of inspections, visits to the mechanic and sales throughout its lifetime. A range of actors, such as users, motorcycle companies and repair shops, need to pass along this information. Which is hard using centralised systems. A motorcycle company might not want to use a centralised tracking system owned by one of its competing motorcycle manufacturers. A decentralised, neutral blockchain offers an alternative here. ‘Blockchain shines when there are multiple different stakeholders that need to access the same system and share information in a decentralized way,’ said Robert Richter who coordinated the EU-funded Blockpool project at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. ‘It creates a system where you don’t need an intermediary.’ “ The blockchain space was too crowded before. Now only the best projects will survive. João Fernandes In this way blockchain might underlie some of the software regular people rely on in the future, without knowing it. ‘Look at the internet,’ said Richter. ‘Today everyone uses it without understanding how it works. But in the past, it was something new that had to be developed. The same thing is happening now with blockchain.’ For that to happen, start-ups will need to develop blockchain applications that make the complex technology accessible for regular companies, like SMEs. A problem that BlockStart and Blockpool worked on for several years. Both projects set up programmes that selected interesting blockchain start-ups, gave them funding and mentoring, and linked them to possible clients. On top of that, they educated existing companies about the potential of blockchain. ‘We found that one of the key hindering effects to the success of blockchain is that business executives don’t have enough knowledge about the potential of the technology,’ said Richter. ‘Which is why educating SMEs, and other companies, is so important.’ BlockStart supported 60 start-ups, linked them up with 67 SMEs, and also gave €20 000 to the start-up finalists. Blockpool did something similar, 25 start-ups went through their programme, during which they each received up to €30 000 in equity-free investment. One of the SME’s that participated in BlockStart is AlBicchiere, an Italian company that offers a “Nespresso for wine” device to customers. The company wanted to be able to chart the journey of their wine, from the grape grower to the customer, and a blockchain system was built by Datarella, one of BlockStart’s start-ups, for this purpose. Crypto winter Surviving crypto winter won’t be easy. Most of these start-ups now need to deal with a technology market that is in upheaval. Even regular technology companies are in trouble, with large players such as Meta, Amazon and Spotify announcing mass layoffs. This might put a damper on the growth of the start-ups supported by BlockStart and Blockpool. ‘The current crypto winter will, I believe, delay the implementation of blockchain,’ said Fernandes. ‘Some projects will have a tougher time raising investment, and finding customers.’ But for the wider blockchain and cryptocurrency space, this crash might be a blessing in disguise, according to Richter and Fernandes. For instance, it could weed out the weaker companies, in favour of the ones with the biggest potential. ‘There are some blockchain projects and cryptocurrencies out there that don’t really serve a purpose,’ said Richter. ‘That’s always the first question I ask: does it have a use-case?’ Fernandes agrees. ‘The blockchain space was too crowded before. Now, only the best projects will survive. The survivors of this winter will be the first movers of the future. In five to 10 years they will become the winners.’ This article was originally published in Horizon, the EU Research and Innovation magazine
- How to compete with robots? Swiss roboticists and economists show you the way!
When it comes to the future of intelligent robots, the first question people ask is often: how many jobs will they make disappear? Whatever the answer, the second question is likely to be: how can I make sure that my job is not among them? In a study just published in Science Robotics , a team of roboticists from EPFL and economists from the University of Lausanne offers answers to both questions. By combining the scientific and technical literature on robotic abilities with employment and wage statistics, they have developed a method to calculate which of the currently existing jobs are more at risk of being performed by machines in the near future. Additionally, they have devised a method for suggesting career transitions to jobs that are less at risk and require smallest retraining efforts. “There are several studies predicting how many jobs will be automated by robots, but they all focus on software robots , such as speech and image recognition, financial robo-advisers, chatbots, and so forth. Furthermore, those predictions wildly oscillate depending on how job requirements and software abilities are assessed. Here, we consider not only artificial intelligence software, but also real intelligent robots that perform physical work and we developed a method for a systematic comparison of human and robotic abilities used in hundreds of jobs”, says Prof. Dario Floreano, Director of EPFL’s Laboratory of Intelligent System, who led the study at EPFL. The key innovation of the study is a new mapping of robot capabilities onto job requirements. The team looked into the European H2020 Robotic Multi-Annual Roadmap (MAR), a strategy document by the European Commission that is periodically revised by robotics experts. The MAR describes dozens of abilities that are required from current robot or may be required by future ones, ranging, organised in categories such as manipulation, perception, sensing, interaction with humans. The researchers went through research papers, patents, and description of robotic products to assess the maturity level of robotic abilities, using a well-known scale for measuring the level of technology development, “technology readiness level” (TRL). For human abilities, they relied on the O*net database, a widely-used resource database on the US job market, that classifies approximately 1,000 occupations and breaks down the skills and knowledge that are most crucial for each of them After selectively matching the human abilities from O*net list to robotic abilities from the MAR document, the team could calculate how likely each existing job occupation is to be performed by a robot. Say, for example, that a job requires a human to work at millimetre-level precision of movements. Robots are very good at that, and the TRL of the corresponding ability is thus the highest. If a job requires enough such skills, it will be more likely to be automated than one that requires abilities such as critical thinking or creativity. The result is a ranking of the 1,000 jobs, with “Physicists” being the ones who have the lowest risk of being replaced by a machine, and “Slaughterers and Meat Packers”, who face the highest risk. In general, jobs in food processing, building and maintenance, construction and extraction appear to have the highest risk. “The key challenge for society today is how to become resilient against automation” says Prof. Rafael Lalive. who co-led the study at the University of Lausanne. “Our work provides detailed career advice for workers who face high risks of automation, which allows them to take on more secure jobs while re-using many of the skills acquired on the old job. Through this advice, governments can support society in becoming more resilient against automation.” The authors then created a method to find, for any given job, alternative jobs that have a significantly lower automation risk and are reasonably close to the original one in terms of the abilities and knowledge they require – thus keeping the retraining effort minimal and making the career transition feasible. To test how that method would perform in real life, they used data from the US workforce and simulated thousands of career moves based on the algorithm’s suggestions, finding that it would indeed allow workers in the occupations with the highest risk to shift towards medium-risk occupations, while undergoing a relatively low retraining effort. The method could be used by governments to measure how many workers could face automation risks and adjust retraining policies, by companies to assess the costs of increasing automation, by robotics manufacturers to better tailor their products to the market needs; and by the public to identify the easiest route to reposition themselves on the job market. Finally, the authors translated the new methods and data into an algorithm that predicts the risk of automation for hundreds of jobs and suggests resilient career transitions at minimal retraining effort, publicly accessible at http://lis2.epfl.ch/resiliencetorobots. - Corals release chemical compounds into the seawater, including caffeine
Stumbling upon a new source of underwater caffeine was just an added bonus of a new study examining the impact of chemical compounds that corals release into the seawater. The study found that the organic chemical compounds produced through metabolism — known as metabolites or exudates — vary significantly by coral species, and that the compounds impact the abundances and compositions of reef microorganisms differently. This differential release of metabolites from benthic reef organisms is particularly significant in the Caribbean, where coral dominance is shifting from hard stony corals to soft octocorals in response to human-caused stressors such as eutrophication, overfishing and global climate change. The study “demonstrates the importance of benthic exudates for structuring microbial communities on oligotrophic reefs by focusing on the exudates released from abundant stony corals, octocorals, and an invasive alga,” according to the paper led by authors at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and published in ISME Communications. Here’s the caffeine connection. For the study, researchers collected exudates from six species of Caribbean benthic organisms in a lab setting, using organisms obtained from within the Virgin Islands National Park, including stony corals, octocorals, and an invasive encrusting alga called Ramicrusta textilis . The researchers surprisingly found that R. textilis released caffeine in high quantities. As to why R. textilis produces caffeine, the study notes that caffeine production has not been widely investigated for marine organisms, but that it is a common metabolite produced by land plants generally to deter herbivores and pathogenic microbes. This study “is an important step forward in identifying chemical signals that can help scientists examinate reef health,” said Elizabeth Kujawinski, co-author of the paper. “Similar to human health diagnostics, the chemical signals in a reef ecosystem are linked to the functions of the symbiotic relationships within reefs.” Kujawinski is director of the Center for Chemical Currencies of a Microbial Planet, a U.S. National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center based at WHOI. Co-author Amy Apprill of WHOI said an important implication of the research is that a diverse benthic community likely supports a more diverse microbial community. “Metabolites are produced by all organisms during normal functions such as digestion and reproduction, and in removing waste products,” said Elizabeth Canuel, a program director in NSF’s Division of Ocean Sciences. “This research provides new insights into the composition of this relatively unknown group of chemicals produced by reef organisms, which could provide valuable information about the health and function of coral reef ecosystems.” (Source: NSF)
- Scientist confessed, “Scientists can never make statements with 100% certainty”
EPFL professor Jacques Fellay, who served on the Swiss National Covid-19 Task Force, has been selected for a new advisory committee that the government set up recently so policymakers and scientists can continue their joint efforts. The pandemic did have a silver lining. At least that was the case in Switzerland, where the public-health crisis opened up the lines of communication between policymakers and scientists like never before. Thanks to the close collaboration between these two groups, albeit after some initial hiccups, “the pandemic didn’t go as badly as it could have,” says Fellay, who also heads EPFL’s Laboratory of Human Genomics of Infection and Immunity. “There were undoubtedly some things we could’ve done better, but in terms of our community response, we rose to the challenge in a responsible, proactive and effective way.” Fellay, an expert in infectious diseases, will serve on the new advisory committee alongside representatives of the Swiss federal government and cantonal governments and over a dozen other experts from a range of scientific fields. The committee will operate until June 2023 and serve as a forum for continuing the joint work and dialogue between policymakers and scientists. We spoke with Fellay about the working relationship between these two groups and what lessons he believes we can learn from the pandemic. As an infectious disease expert, were you worried when Covid-19 first emerged? I knew that sooner or later, we’d be faced with a global pandemic. But it was still a surprise when I saw the theory play out in practice. Covid-19 was a serious threat and required a concerted effort from society as a whole and from the scientific community in particular. The way we overcame that threat was unprecedented: for the first time ever, we fought off a pandemic with a vaccine developed at breakneck speed. This reduced the number of deaths considerably and mitigated the pandemic’s impact. I’m sure there are some things that could’ve gone more smoothly, but we don’t live in an ideal world. So do you think the pandemic is behind us? What we can say is that the acute phase of the pandemic is behind us and the virus is now something we’ll have to live with. People are still getting sick and dying from Covid, but for the vast majority of us, life has pretty much returned to normal. Now we’ve got to tackle political issues like whether the cost of Covid tests should still be covered and what measures should be taken to protect at-risk individuals. Can we now consider Covid as more or less like the flu? Not really. The mortality rate for Covid-19 is significantly higher than that for influenza, especially among the elderly and immunosuppressed. And we don’t know what all the consequences are of long Covid, which is something that a considerable portion of the population is suffering from. SARS-CoV-2 is an aggressive virus. Personally, I still wear an FFP2 mask on public transportation and I got my second booster of the vaccine. What was the scientific community’s response? Scientists did what they do best: collect and analyze data, test hypotheses and compare results. But they did so at an amazing speed and in full transparency – usually this kind of R&D is done out of the public eye. During a crisis, people need clear answers, but scientists can provide only conditional ones. The fundamental principle of the scientific method is to challenge facts and assumptions. Scientists can never make statements with 100% certainty. For people who think science should always be black and white, this made them skeptical of our recommendations. And the response of policymakers? While scientists’ role is to put forth various options based on data and models, the role of policymakers is to make decisions. That’s what they’re elected for, and they’ve been given the requisite authority and responsibility. The Swiss government set up the task force so that policymakers could have access to research findings as soon as they became available. Did that approach work? There were some growing pains as people struggled to find their place. Some scientists had trouble sticking to their role as advisors, while some policymakers didn’t appreciate the way in which the task force communicated with the general public. But both groups made an effort to understand each other, and after a while we were able to work together smoothly. I hope this kind of open dialogue will continue. Is that the goal of the new advisory committee? Yes. The bodies that set up the committee – namely, the Conference of Cantonal Health Directors, the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs, and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation – wanted to make sure they could keep getting the latest information from scientists in a structured way. The committee will meet once a week to review recent developments and ask questions. Why is the committee scheduled to last only a few months? The idea was to cover the winter season, but also to test a new scientific advisory mechanism that could be applied in other areas as well. The main message is that all policymakers need to be up to date on the facts.Jacques Fellay, head of EPFL’s Laboratory of Human Genomics of Infection and Immunity Jacques Fellay, head of EPFL’s Laboratory of Human Genomics of Infection and Immunity Do you think there should be more scientists in politics? That could lead to better understanding overall. But the main message is that all policymakers need to be up to date on the facts. So even if there are more scientists in parliament, policymakers will still need to work closely with subject-matter experts. How do you feel the press has done? Overall I’d say they’ve done a good job and have been successful in presenting different viewpoints. We have an excellent level of scientific journalism here in French-speaking Switzerland, meaning those who wanted to keep track of research developments during the pandemic were able to do so. What are your views on scientific communications with the general public? When we held the referendum here in Switzerland on genetic engineering back in 1998, scientists finally realized they had no choice but to start speaking with voters because the issues at stake were too important. That was the first time scientists really came down from their ivory tower. Today there are many different channels for communicating with the general public, but it’s true that most of our messages go to people who already have an interest in science. We nevertheless have an important, even essential duty to communicate with citizens in a way they can understand. And we’ve seen they have a lot to say about the research we’re doing. There’s an opportunity here to form a real partnership, along the lines of the citizen science movement that’s under way. Non-experts can bring us fresh ideas and force us out of our silo mentality. The pandemic once again demonstrated how crucial basic research is.Jacques Fellay Jacques Fellay Did Covid research supplant the other research you were doing – either you personally or the scientific community in general? Not really. For me personally, the research we’re doing on the human genomics of infectious diseases is done mostly with bioinformatics and we were able to keep using our systems during the pandemic. And more broadly, some research did have to be put on hold, but only for a little while. However, I think the Covid research that was done will eventually benefit biomedicine as a whole. The same thing happened with HIV nearly 40 years ago: when AIDS first emerged, the entire scientific community focused their efforts on fighting it and made a number of discoveries that were useful in other fields as well. The Covid pandemic served to concentrate research efforts and speed them up. In human genomics, we achieved in one year what would’ve taken a decade under normal circumstances. There’s been a step change in the pace of scientific discovery – and humankind will only benefit. I’d add that the pandemic once again demonstrated how crucial basic research is. Scientists were able to develop a vaccine so quickly and effectively thanks to the decades of research that had already been done on messenger RNA. It’s proof that while science may be important during a crisis, it’s essential during times of business as usual. - Somalia in famine – FAO calls for fully funded, at-scale and livelihoods support to save lives
Rome – With famine fast approaching in Somalia, there is still time to turn the tide by addressing the immediate needs of rural communities who are amongst those at greatest risk, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said today in the context of the recently released food security survey findings. However, unless this is accompanied by massively scaled up investment in resilience and livelihoods support, we will never change this continued pattern of hunger extremes. Somalia has been on the brink of famine in recent months due to the historic drought triggered by five consecutive failed rainy seasons, skyrocketing food prices and intensifying conflict. The Integrated Food Security Phase (IPC) Acute Food Insecurity analysis specifically flags elevated mortality levels in some of the most exposed areas. According to the latest projection update, between January and March 2023, 1.9 million people are expected to be in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) conditions, increasing to 2.7 million people between April and June. Up to 727,000 people could face catastrophic food insecurity by June 2023, meaning starvation and death. “The situation in Somalia remains dire. Current levels of humanitarian assistance are helping to prevent extreme outcomes, but they are not sufficient to halt the threat of famine beyond a few months at a time,” said Etienne Peterschmitt, FAO Representative in Somalia. “People are dying in IPC Phase 4. Yet, still there is an unrelenting focus on famine declarations as a trigger for action. Real action needs to be taken not only to help communities meet their immediate needs, but also so they can adapt their livelihoods and build resilience in the face of climate crises and economic shocks, preparing them for whatever the future may bring.” “Sustained levels of at-scale support will be required well into mid- to late-2023 if we are to prevent, not just delay famine,” he added. Rural communities are most at risk The extended and unprecedented drought conditions have left pastoral, agropastoral and farming communities unable to cope. Rural farming and pastoralist communities, as well as displaced communities who are overwhelmingly from rural areas, are among those most at risk of famine. Their survival depends on the survival of their herds and ability to grow crops, which have been severely hampered by the extended drought. Their children’s nutrition is inextricably linked to the health and productivity of their animals. Unable to produce milk, those animals have been dying at a shocking rate for the last year. It is crucial to save livestock and keep them fed and healthy since they are the only source of food and income for many rural communities. Preliminary findings from an upcoming study in the Horn of Africa indicate that keeping livestock fed reduced the risk of acute malnutrition by up to 11% and of child stunting by up to 8% in pastoralist communities. Providing this assistance is relatively cheap, averaging at about $0.40 per goat compared with $40 to replace the goat. FAO will continue providing range cubes and vaccines for animals and restoring water holes, alongside cash assistance to help people meet their basic needs. Livelihoods support severely underfunded Rural livelihoods assistance saves lives, helping people to remain in their homes when it is safe for them to do so and paving the way for future recovery. Currently, a lack of large-scale funding for livelihoods support, climate‑resilient food production and development priorities poses great challenges. This leaves livelihoods and the productive sectors they depend on, weak and vulnerable to climate and economic shocks. FAO’s response to the crisis From May to December 2022, under the Famine Prevention Scale-up Plan, FAO has reached more than 700 000 individuals across 35 districts with cash, more than 40 000 individuals with agricultural inputs such as seeds, animal feed and fertilizers, treated 11 million animals to support their survival and trucked 27 million litres of water to remote areas. Over $24 million in cash, alongside livelihoods assistance, has been provided to rural communities who are most exposed to famine. Furthermore, FAO plans to reach over a million more people in the coming months. Although FAO’s appeal is expected to be 70 percent funded within the year, additional funds are still urgently needed to provide life-saving support through cash transfers in hard-to-reach and inaccessible rural areas, as well as to secure the main Gu season harvest, and ensure those who can plant receive inputs on time. - How to Optimize a Webpage for Search Engines
If you want your site to rank high on SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages), you need to put in the work to optimize it for search engines. There are a few key tips and tricks you can follow to help get your webpage ranking in no time. From proper keyword usage to ensuring your site is mobile-friendly, read on for our top tips on how to optimize a webpage for search engines. Understand SEO To really understand SEO, you need to understand how search engines work. A search engine is a software program that helps people find information on the internet. Search engines use algorithms to rank websites based on various factors, such as the quality of the content, the number of backlinks, and the age of the domain. You can optimize your website for search engines by doing things like creating high-quality content, building backlinks, and choosing an appropriate domain name. On-Page SEO Factors There are over 200 on-page and off-page SEO factors that can influence your website’s ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs), but not all of them are equally important. Internal linking 8. Mobile optimization 9. Page speed 10. Schema markup Let’s take a closer look at each of these 10 on-page SEO factors: 1. Title Tags: A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. Title tags are displayed on SERPs as the clickable headline for a given result, and they are important for usability, SEO, and social sharing. To build backlinks, you need to create great content that other people will want to link to. You can also promote your content on social media and other websites. If you get featured on a popular website or blog, that’s a great way to get high-quality backlinks. You can also try guest posting on other websites and linking back to your website in your author bio. Another important off-page SEO factor is online reviews. Online reviews can help improve your click-through rate (CTR) and help potential customers learn more about your business. Reviews also signals to Google that your business is trustworthy and relevant. You can encourage customers to leave reviews by sending follow-up emails after they make a purchase or by adding a “write a review” link on your website. - Earth regulating its own temperature over millennia, new study finds
The Earth’s climate has undergone big changes, from global volcanism to planet-cooling ice ages and dramatic shifts in solar radiation. And yet life, for the last 3.7 billion years, has kept on beating. Now, a U.S. National Science Foundation-supported study by MIT researchers in Science Advances confirms that the planet harbors a “stabilizing feedback” mechanism that acts over hundreds of thousands of years to pull the climate back from the brink, keeping global temperatures within a steady, habitable range. Just how does it accomplish this? A likely mechanism is “silicate weathering” — a geological process by which the slow and steady erosion of silicate rocks involves chemical reactions that ultimately draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and into ocean sediments, where the carbon dioxide is incorporated into sedimentary rocks. Scientists have long suspected that silicate weathering plays a major role in regulating the Earth’s carbon cycle. The mechanism of silicate weathering could provide a geologically constant force in keeping carbon dioxide — and global temperatures — in check. But there’s never been direct evidence for the continual operation of such feedback, until now. The new findings are based on a study of paleoclimate data that record changes in average global temperatures over the last 66 million years. The MIT team applied a mathematical analysis to see whether the data revealed any patterns characteristic of stabilizing phenomena that reined in global temperatures on a geologic time scale. They found that indeed there appears to be a consistent pattern in which the Earth’s temperature swings are dampened over time scales of hundreds of thousands of years. The duration of this effect is like the time scales over which silicate weathering is predicted to act. The results are the first to use actual data to confirm the existence of a stabilizing feedback, the mechanism of which is likely silicate weathering. This stabilizing feedback would explain how the Earth has remained habitable through dramatic climate events in the geologic past. (Source: National Science Foundation) #science

- Use Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Sports Performance
EPFL researchers have teamed up with Dartfish and the Lausanne Hockey Club to push the boundaries of sports-performance analysis by applying computer vision and machine-learning technology to action on the ice. While there’s no substitute for long hours of training, sports video analysis has become a must-have in the race for medals. Dartfish, an EPFL spin-off founded in 1999, specializes in precisely this field; its technology lets athletes and coaches in both individual and team sports review video footage and data – both live and recorded – and develop tactical strategies. Dartfish’s technology relies on an automated human-detection and tracking system. But maintaining high standards of accuracy and reliability is a challenge. That’s where the researchers at EPFL’s Visual Intelligence for Transportation laboratory (VITA) come into play. “We use cameras to detect, track and forecast human behaviors,” says Alexandre Alahi, head of the VITA Lab. “Our cameras are placed on cars, in buildings – and now, sports arenas.” Around a year ago, Alahi’s research group teamed up with Dartfish on a project funded by Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency. Together, they aim to develop a new kind of video analysis system that would combine the VITA Lab’s computer vision technology with Dartfish’s sports-focused expertise. And because – in ice hockey at least – a strong offensive line needs three players, they chose the Lausanne Hockey Club (LHC) as the testing ground for their device. Tests under real-world conditions The scientists installed ten cameras in the Vaudoise Aréna, which is where LHC plays its home games: four on the ceiling to track players, the referees, and the puck, and six around the edge of the ice to identify the players. The researchers have already started reviewing several recorded matches, using the footage and associated data to train their algorithms on the new environment. “So far, we’ve achieved a 94% accuracy rate when it comes to detection,” says Alahi. But the tracking part of the equation is considerably more difficult. To overcome this hurdle, the researchers will develop new methods based on players’ body poses. This should generate more reliable results in the tracking of individuals. Dartfish’s system, once complete, will produce three types of data. CEO Jean-Sebastien Mérieux explains: “First, it’ll record individual players’ positions every 20 milliseconds. Second, it’ll generate match statistics showing how far each player traveled, how many shots he took, how long he spent on the ice, and so on. And third, it’ll perform fully automated match sequencing – something that today is done mostly manually.” Tagged Video with Dartfish Tracking © Dartfish “The growing relationship between EPFL and LHC is building a foundation that increases the potential of LHC players, the club and the academy,” says John Fust, the LHC sports director. “Our partnership will allow LHC to reach new heights on and off the ice.” Quirin Söhnlein, head of performance at LHC, adds: “The detailed statistics will give us a clear advantage, allowing us to take our match analyses to the next level.” Better algorithms with less training Nowadays, the field of machine learning reaches impressive results with massive amount of examples. “That means the more data you have, the better the algorithms perform,” explains Alahi. “But we want to develop new methods that deliver high level of performance with only a limited number of examples.” He sees the joint research with LHC as an opportunity to advance AI models with real-world problems. “Ultimately, we’d like to come up with an affordable human-analysis system that works with any type of camera and in any type of setting – from predicting if a pedestrian will jaywalk in urban environments to predicting the collective behavior in team sports.” A living laboratory This research – yet another example of the “living laboratory” approach – will also help strengthen ties across the industry. “It’s an opportunity to accelerate technology transfer by getting end users, R&D labs, and the businesses marketing the technology to work together early-on in the development process,” says Pascal Vuilliomenet, who initiated the collaboration between EPFL, Dartfish and the LHC through EPFL’s SportTech initiative. “It’s an approach that can be duplicated in other sports.” This research will further anchor the Lausanne region as a hotbed of sports innovation, paving the way to promising new developments down the line. But the fact of the matter is, content marketing is essential to the success of any digital marketing strategy. The good news is, we’re here to help. In this blog post, we’ll give you 5 practical tactics you can use to succeed in content marketing. These tips are easy to implement and will help you see results in no time. Understand Your Target Audience If you want to succeed in content marketing, it is essential that you take the time to understand your target audience. Who are they? What are their needs and wants? What are their pain points? Once you have a good understanding of your target audience, you will be able to create content that resonates with them and helps them solve their problems. In order to understand your target audience, you need to do some research. Start by looking at your existing customer base. Who are they? What do they do? What do they like? Next, take a look at your competition. Who are they targeting? What kind of content are they creating? And finally, look at your industry as a whole. Who is the typical customer in your industry? what do they need and want from a company like yours? Once you have gathered all of this information, take some time to sit down and really think about who your target audience is. Who do you want to reach with your content? What kind of people will find value in what you have to say? Once you have a good understanding of who your target audience is, you can start creating content that resonates with them. Define Your Objectives and KPIs As a first step, you need to define your content marketing objectives and KPIs. What are your goals for content marketing? Do you want to increase brand awareness, drive traffic to your website, or generate leads? Once you’ve defined your objectives, you can start to develop KPIs to measure your success. Some common KPIs for content marketing include website traffic, number of leads generated, and social media engagement. By setting clear objectives and KPIs from the start, you’ll be able to measure the success of your content marketing campaigns and make necessary adjustments along the way. Create Compelling and Engaging Content If you want your content to succeed, you need to make it compelling and engaging. Here are some practical tactics to make your content more likely to resonate with your audience and achieve your desired results: 1. Know Your Audience Before you can create compelling and engaging content, you need to know who your audience is. What are their needs and wants? What kind of language do they use? What topics are they interested in? Once you have a good understanding of your audience, you can start creating content that appeals to them. 2. Write Compelling Headlines Your headline is the first thing people will see, so it needs to be attention-grabbing and relevant to the rest of your content. A good headline will make people want to read more, so take some time to craft an effective one. 3. Use Strong Images Images are another important element of great content. People are visual creatures, so including strong images that support your message can help engage readers and make your content more memorable. Just be sure not to overdo it – too many images can be overwhelming. 4. Write Engaging Copy Once people start reading your content, you need to keep them engaged with strong writing. This means using active voice, short sentences, and clear language throughout. You should also avoid jargon or industry-specific terms that might not be familiar to your reader. Promote Your Content When it comes to content marketing, promotion is key. Without promoting your content, it will be very difficult to succeed. There are a number of different ways that you can promote your content. Here are a few practical tactics that you can use to promote your content and help ensure your success: 1. Use social media. Social media is a great way to get the word out about your content. Be sure to share your content on all of the major social networks, and encourage others to do the same. 2. Write guest posts. Guest posting on other blogs is a great way to get exposure for your own blog and content. When you guest post, be sure to include a link back to your own site so people can find you easily. 3. Leverage influencers. If you can get influential people in your industry to share your content, it will reach a much larger audience. Try reaching out to influencers and asking them to share your content with their followers. 4. Paid advertising. Paid advertising can be an effective way to promote your content if done correctly. Try using platforms like Facebook Ads or Google AdWords to reach people who are interested in what you have to say. 5. PR & media outreach. Getting press coverage for your business is a great way to promote your content and build credibility for your brand. Try reaching out to journalists and bloggers in your industry and pitching them story ideas that feature your company or website Measure Your Results The first step to taking your content marketing strategy up a notch is to measure your results. By understanding what’s working and what’s not, you can adjust your approach accordingly and make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. There are a number of metrics you can track, but some of the most important ones to focus on include Website traffic: How many people are visiting your website as a result of your content? Track this using Google Analytics or a similar tool. Leads generated: Keep tabs on how many leads you’re generating from your content. This could be signups for a newsletter, requests for more information, etc. Engagement: Are people interacting with your content? Track things like social shares, comments, and time spent on page. Sales: This one is pretty self-explanatory – track how much revenue your content is helping to generate. Don’t get too bogged down in the numbers – focus on the key metrics that will give you the most insights into whether or not your content marketing efforts are paying off. And remember, it takes time to see results – don’t expect miracles overnight!
- 4 Reasons Why Local SEO is Important
You may have heard the term “SEO” before, but what exactly is it? And more importantly, why should you care? In short, SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” It is the process of optimizing a website for Google’s search algorithms with the goal of earning higher web traffic levels and improving the visibility of that site. There are many different types of SEO, but in this blog post, we will focus on Local SEO. Local SEO is a subset of SEO that is specifically geared towards helping local businesses rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). If you own or operate a local business, then you should definitely care about Local SEO! Here are four reasons why: Local SEO Helps You Rank Higher in Google Maps Local SEO is critical for businesses that want to be visible in Google Maps. By optimizing your business listing and making sure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) is consistent across the web, you can improve your chances of ranking higher in local search results. In addition, creating quality content and reviews on your Google My Business page can also help you rank higher in Maps. Local SEO Increases Your Visibility to Relevant Customers If you want your business to be found by potential customers in your local area, then you need to make sure your website is optimized for local search. Local SEO ensures that your website appears as high as possible in search results when people are searching for businesses like yours in their local area. This is important because the higher your website appears in search results, the more likely people are to click on it and visit your site. Local SEO is especially important if you have a brick-and-mortar location that customers can visit. In this case, you need to make sure potential customers can find your business when they search for relevant keywords. For example, if you’re a restaurant in Los Angeles, you want to appear in search results when people search for “restaurants in Los Angeles.” There are a number of factors that go into local SEO, but some of the most important ones include having your name, address, and phone number (NAP) listed on your website, as well as making sure your website is optimized for mobile devices. Additionally, claiming and verifying your Google My Business listing is another key factor in local SEO. By optimizing your website for local search, you’ll be able to increase your visibility to relevant customers and grow your business. Local SEO Builds Trust and Credibility If you’re a business that serves a local area, then you need to make sure you’re doing everything possible to optimize your site for local SEO. Why? Because local SEO builds trust and credibility with potential customers in your area. When potential customers search for businesses like yours online, they’re more likely to trust and choose a business that shows up in the search results than one that doesn’t. That’s because appearing in the search results demonstrates that you have a well-optimized website that the search engines trust. In addition, local SEO can help you build credibility with potential customers by giving them more information about your business. For example, when searchers see your business listing in the search results, they’ll also see your address, phone number, and hours of operation. This helps boost your credibility because it allows potential customers to know that you’re a real business with a physical location that they can visit. So if you want to build trust and credibility with potential customers in your local area, make sure you’re Optimizing your website for local SEO. It could be the difference between getting new customers and losing out to your competitors. Local SEO Gives You an Edge Over National Competitors If you’re a local business, then you know that the competition can be tough. You might be up against some big national brands, and it can be hard to stand out. That’s where local SEO comes in. Local SEO is all about optimizing your website and online presence to be found by people who are searching for businesses like yours in your area. There are a few key benefits of investing in local SEO: 1. Local SEO Gives You an Edge Over National Competitors When someone does a search for a product or service in their area, businesses that show up in the results are going to get more attention than businesses that don’t. If you’re not doing local SEO, then you’re missing out on valuable traffic and potential customers. 2. Local SEO is More Cost-Effective Than Traditional Advertising Advertising can be expensive, and it’s not always effective. With local SEO, you can specifically target potential customers who are already interested in what you have to offer. This makes it a much more cost-effective way to reach your target market. 3. Local SEO Helps You Build Trust and credibility When potential customers see that you’re ranking high in the search results for their area, they’ll automatically assume that you’re a credible and trustworthy business. This can help increase conversion rates and lead to more sales. How to Optimize Your Local SEO Efforts As a local business, it is important to optimize your website for local SEO in order to be found by potential customers searching online. Here are some tips on how to do just that: 1. Use keyword-rich titles and descriptions. When creating content for your website, be sure to use keywords that relate to your business and location. This will help your website come up in search results when people are searching for businesses like yours. 2. Claim your Google My Business listing. Google My Business is a free listing that allows you to control how your business appears in Google Search and Maps. Be sure to claim and verify your listing, and fill out as much information as possible so potential customers can learn more about your business. 3. Get listed in directories. - New UN survey shows Ukraine rural households are increasingly affected by the war
Kyiv/Rome – After nine months of war in Ukraine, rural households are increasingly affected by the conflict with many forced to scale down or abandon agricultural activities, according to a new survey released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The Impact of the war on agriculture and rural livelihoods in Ukraine: Findings of a nationwide rural household survey revealed that one in every four of the 5 200 respondents surveyed had reduced or stopped agricultural production due to the conflict. Rural households were interviewed to enhance understanding of the current agriculture and livelihoods situation and needs, particularly in view of the upcoming winter season. “Ukraine’s agriculture sector is an important source of livelihoods for the roughly 13 million Ukrainians living in rural areas. While around two-thirds of agricultural production is made by enterprises, rural households produce around 32 percent,” said Pierre Vauthier, head of FAO’s Ukraine Country Office. “The report indicates that 25 percent of the Ukrainian rural population involved in agriculture stopped their activities or reduced their output due to the war. The situation is much worse in the most agriculture-dependent regions of Ukraine, where over 40 percent of rural families are affected.” The impact of the war on the broader production system, characterized by disruptions to value and supply chains and price volatility, has had repercussions on the rural population, underlining their interdependence with the country’s agricultural economy. While the effects of the war are more prominent in the oblasts (regions) along the front line, these are also widely experienced in the rest of the country. “The report focuses on those households mostly involved in backyard farming and small-scale agricultural production,” said Lavinia Antonaci, coordinator of the assessment. “Although not officially defined as farmers, they play a pivotal role in ensuring the food security, incomes and livelihoods of rural populations by providing for their own food consumption as well as selling products locally, thus contributing to local supply chains.” Key findings One in every four respondents had reduced or stopped agricultural production due to the war, with some oblasts, including Sumska, Dnipropetrovska, Odeska, Chernihivska and Mykolaivska, reporting higher numbers – over 40 percent of the rural households in these regions. Increase in agricultural production costs for both crop (72 percent of the households) and livestock (64 percent of the households) activities due to the war were widely felt across the country. Over half of the rural households reported a decrease in income from across the country, compared with the same period last year. In the frontline oblasts, this trend was more accentuated: Sumska – 67 percent, Mykolaivska – 65 percent, Donetska – 63 percent, and Zaporizka – 63 percent. Internally displaced persons and returnees are more affected by income decreases. With regard to food expenditure, more than half of the rural households interviewed reported to have spent over 50 percent of their total expenditure on food between June and September 2022. In the frontline oblasts, almost one in five respondents (18 percent) declared to have spent over 75 percent of their total household expenditure on food. Across the country as a whole, this figure was around 14 percent. On average at national level, around 57 percent of the households interviewed have adopted negative coping mechanisms by spending savings and borrowing money, selling productive assets, reducing expenses on healthcare, or decreasing expenditure on fertilizer, pesticide, animal feed and veterinary care. The major difficulties expected in the next few months in terms of agricultural production for both crop and livestock activities are low benefits from sale of products, constrained access to fertilizers or pesticides, fuel or electricity to power equipment, and animal feed. Similarly, rural households cited access to seeds, fertilizers and animal feed to be among their greatest needs. Animal feed was most needed in Chernivetska, Donetska, Sumska, Vinnytska, Zakarpatska and Zaporizka oblasts. As the war persists, the current situation is likely to deteriorate further. Compounded by the winter season and the potential for further internal displacements to rural areas, the coping capacities of the rural population are likely to become progressively strained. It is critical to protect those households from the further deterioration of their productive capacities, which are the foundations of their resilience. The report notes that support to rural household food production is a means to mitigate the negative impacts of the war on their food security and livelihoods, and will also improve and maintain the hosting capacities of rural households. Revitalizing and sustaining the small-scale agriculture sector will strengthen and secure the contribution of rural households to the broader agricultural system and enhance the benefits they can access in return. In addition, it is critical to monitor the constantly changing situation and to continue providing complementary assessments and integrated analyses on the impact of the war on Ukraine’s agricultural system to better inform short-, medium- and long-term actions.

- To ensure safe drinking-water, we need to act FAST
GENEVA, 14 DECEMBER 2022 (WHO) – Urgent action is needed globally and locally to achieve safe and sustainably managed water, sanitation and hygiene for all in order to prevent devastating impacts on the health of millions of people. Findings from WHO and UN-Water’s Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS) report show that acceleration is needed in many countries to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – water and sanitation for all by 2030. While 45% of countries are on track to achieve their nationally-defined drinking-water coverage targets, only 25% of countries are on track to achieve their national sanitation targets. Less than a third of countries reported to have sufficient human resources required to carry out key drinking-water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) functions. The GLAAS 2022 report, which details the latest status of WASH systems in more than 120 countries, is the largest data collection from the greatest number of countries to date. While there has been an increase in WASH budgets in some countries, a large number–over 75% of countries reported insufficient funding to implement their WASH plans and strategies. “We are facing an urgent crisis: poor access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene claim millions of lives each year, while the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related extreme weather events continue to hamper the delivery of safe WASH services,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “We call on governments and development partners to strengthen WASH systems and dramatically increase investment to extend access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation services to all by 2030, beginning with the most vulnerable.” The GLAAS data show, however, that most WASH policies and plans do not address risks of climate change to WASH services, nor the climate resilience of WASH technologies and management systems. Just over two thirds of countries have measures in WASH policies to reach populations disproportionately affected by climate change. However, only about one third monitor progress or allocate explicit funding to these populations. “The world is seriously off-track to achieve SDG 6 on water and sanitation for all, by 2030. This leaves billions of people dangerously exposed to infectious diseases, especially in the aftermath of disasters, including climate change-related events,” said Gilbert F. Houngbo, Chair of UN-Water, and Director General of the International Labour Organization. “The new data from GLAAS will inform the voluntary commitments the international community will make at the UN 2023 Water Conference in March, helping us target the most vulnerable communities and solve the global water and sanitation crisis.” Urgency and opportunities Dire consequences of climate change and extreme weather events bring more attention to the issues, underlining an urgent need for a whole-of-society approach and global cooperation to act together. The GLAAS 2022 report shows that countries making progress demonstrated high level of political commitment and investments in improving safe WASH systems. With the GLAAS 2022 report, WHO and UN-Water call on all governments and stakeholders to scale up support for WASH service delivery, through strengthened governance, financing, monitoring, regulation, and capacity development. The report sets the scene for action ahead of a historic water and sanitation meeting planned in 2023. For the first time in 50 years, the global community—through the United Nations—will review progress and make firm commitments to renew action on water and sanitation with global leaders. The UN 2023 Water Conference – formally known as the 2023 Conference for the Midterm Comprehensive Review of Implementation of the UN Decade for Action on Water and Sanitation (2018-2028) – will take place at UN Headquarters in New York, 22-24 March 2023. Note The UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS) data portal is now online at https://glaas.who.int

- The Beginner’s Guide to Site Optimization
Site optimization is vital for any business that wants to succeed online. But what is site optimization, and where do you even begin? This guide will introduce you to the basics of site optimization and show you how to get started with making your site more visible to search engines and potential customers. We’ll cover topics like keyword research, on-page optimization, and link building so that you can start generating more traffic and sales for your business. What is site optimization? Site optimization is the process of making a website’s pages as effective as possible at achieving their purpose. Typically, this means improving the site’s ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs), but it can also refer to other measures such as improve conversion rates or reducing page load times. There are many different factors that can affect a website’s optimization, from the quality of the site’s content to its technical aspects like how fast the pages load. SEO is an important part of site optimization, and it refers to the practice of optimizing a site for better search engine visibility. However, there’s more to it than just SEO – all aspects of the site need to be considered in order to make sure it’s as effective as possible. That said, site optimization can be a complex and time-consuming process, which is why many businesses choose to work with an agency or consultant that specializes in this area. If you’re just getting started with site optimization, though, there are a few simple things you can do to get started on the right foot: 1. Make sure your website is well-designed and user-friendly. 2. Pay attention to your website’s loading speed and make sure pages load quickly. 3. Ensure that your website is mobile-friendly and responsive – more and more people are using mobile devices to access the internet, so it’s important that your site looks good and works well on these devices. Why is site optimization important? If you want people to find your site, you need to optimize it for search engines. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of making your site more visible in search results. The higher your site ranks in the results, the more likely people are to click on it. Site optimization is important because it helps your site rank higher in search results. When your site ranks higher, more people are likely to see it and visit it. What are some common site optimization techniques? There are a number of different techniques that can be used to optimize a website for search engines and improve its overall performance. Some common site optimization techniques include: -Developing keyword-rich content -Utilizing social media and other online platforms to promote content -Improving website loading speed – Enhancing user experience through better design and navigation Each website is unique, so the specific optimization techniques that will work best may vary from one site to the next. However, by using the above mentioned methods as a starting point, it is possible to make significant improvements in both search engine ranking and overall visitor satisfaction. How to optimize your website for search engines Assuming you’ve already created quality content, there are a number of ways you can optimize your website for search engines. First, make sure all of your website’s pages are linked together. This allows search engines to easily crawl your site and index all of your content. Next, focus on optimizing your website’s title tags and meta descriptions. These are the elements that appear in search engine results, so it’s important to make them as keyword-rich and compelling as possible. Finally, take advantage of social media platforms to promote your content. Search engines often give higher rankings to websites that have a strong social media presence. By sharing your content on sites like Twitter and Facebook, you can increase the chances that it will rank highly in search engine results. How to optimize your website for conversion If you’re looking to increase the number of conversions on your website, there are a few things you can do to optimize it for conversion. First, make sure your site is easy to use and navigate. Visitors should be able to find what they’re looking for quickly and easily. Second, ensure that your forms are short and simple. The fewer fields there are to fill out, the more likely visitors are to complete them. Third, include strong calls-to-action throughout your site so that visitors know what you want them to do. Fourth, make sure your site is mobile-friendly so that people can convert even when they’re on the go. And fifth, test, test, test! Try different versions of your forms and calls-to-action to see what works best for your audience. By following these tips, you can Optimize Your Website for Conversion and increase the number of leads and sales you generate from your online traffic.
- Droughts are associated with Increase in Suicides – Research
CHICAGO—Droughts may increase the rate of suicide in the United States, according to new research being presented at AGU’s Fall Meeting on 13 December in Chicago and online. The health impacts of drought are less understood than impacts from other types of natural disasters due to their slower nature compared to hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes. And most of the research that has been conducted on drought is related to physical health impacts, such as the increased incidence of strokes in the hot, dry weather. “We don’t have studies on drought and suicide in the U.S.,” said Azar Abadi, a researcher in climate epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center who will be presenting the work. “Mental health is one of the hidden health outcomes of climate change.” To better understand whether there is an association between drought and suicide risk, Abadi and her colleagues examined data on suicide rates from the National Center for Health Statistics, a unit of the Center for Disease Control, and compared these to the Evaporative Demand Drought Index and the U.S. Drought Monitor categories from 2000 to 2018. They found a positive association between drought and suicide. The association was higher for firearm suicide compared to non-firearm suicides. For both types of suicides, the association was higher in the middle and severe stages of the drought compared to the beginning and the later stages of the drought. “This is the most vulnerable window for firearm suicide, when drought is worsening,” Abadi said. Longer-term droughts also had a higher association with suicide rates than shorter droughts. DEMOGRAPHIC DIFFERENCES Abadi’s team also found some differences in the way that different demographics were affected by suicide during droughts. Suicides among aging people and people under 20 years of age had the highest positive association with drought. Abadi found people who identified as neither Black nor white, including Latin and Asian people, had stronger associations between suicide and drought, while white and Black people had lower associations. The relative risk was also higher in females than males. “Men are often expected to commit more firearm suicide, but women are more at-risk during drought, according to this study,” Abadi said. Finally, people living outside urban areas had stronger positive associations between drought and suicide than those who lived in metropolitan counties. “Guns are more accessible and more available outside cities,” particularly in rural and farming communities, Abadi said. Abadi hopes that this study can help suicide prevention organizations to focus their efforts during drought. Putting more resources into non-urban areas or focusing more on aging populations might be ways to mitigate the amount of these kinds of deaths. Source: AGU
- Learn the world’s agrifood systems from FAO’s Statistical Yearbook 2022
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published its annual Statistical Yearbook, comprising hundreds of pages of organized data covering themes from agricultural employment, agrifood trade, fertilizer and pesticide use around the world as well as environmental and climate factors. This is a lot of key policy-relevant information at a glance, easily and quickly accessible. The Statistical Yearbook World Food and Agriculture 2022 is available in a digital downloadable version . “FAO assigns tremendous importance to data and statistics as a global public good at the core of our efforts to advance sustainable development,” said José Rosero Moncayo, Director of FAO’s Statistics Division, “FAO is committed to ensuring free access to current, reliable, timely and trusted data, necessary to chart a course towards more sustainable and equitable agrifood systems and a world free of hunger.” The 2022 edition is built around four thematic chapters: one on economic dimension; one on production, trade and price of commodities; one on food security and nutrition; and one on the sustainability and environmental aspects of agriculture. Along with assessments made at global and regional levels, it contains detailed data taken from the more than 20 000 indicators covering more than 245 countries and territories that the freely accessible FAOSTAT data platform contains. Key facts Dietary energy supply, a key indicator for food security, went up in all regions since 2000, and did so the most in Asia. The world average is now 2 960 calories per person per day, up 9 percent, with the level peaking at 3 540 calories per day per person in Europe and North America. Today, some 866 million people work in agriculture, more than a quarter of the global work force, and produced $3.6 trillion in value-added. Compared to 2000, those figures represent a 78 percent increase in economic value, produced by 16 percent fewer people, with Africa posting double that pace of growth. Since 2000, the production of primary crops, such as sugarcane, maize, wheat and rice, grew by 52 percent from 2000 to 2020 to reach 9.3 billion tonnes. Vegetable oil production increased by 125 percent over that period, with palm oil output growing by 236 percent. Meat output, led by chicken, grew by 45 percent, while the growth rate for fruits and vegetables was 20 percent or below. Sugarcane is the world’s largest crop by volume, with 1. 9 million tonnes annually. Maize is next at 1.2 billion tonnes. Global food exports have risen to $1.42 trillion, up by a factor of 3.7 since 2000. Worldwide, the largest food-exporting countries in gross terms are the United States of America, the Netherlands and China. The largest exporters in net terms were Brazil, by far, followed by Argentina and Spain. The largest net importing countries were China, Japan and the United Kingdom. Some 4.74 billion hectares of the planet’s surface is agricultural land, including meadows and pastures as well as crops. That figure is down 3 percent from 2000, but down six times as much in per capita terms, with Africa again in the lead. Worldwide pesticide use peaked in 2012 and began declining in 2017. The countries with the highest pesticide application per hectare are Saint Lucia, Maldives and Oman. Climate and environmental factors The Statistical Yearbook also taps on FAOSTAT’s rich and growing information sets about climate and environmental factors that impact on and result from agrifood systems. Average temperature in 2021 were 1.44 °C hotter than the average from 1951 to 1980. Europe has had the highest temperature change, followed by Asia, with Oceania reporting by far the least change. Greenhouse gas emissions on agricultural land declined by 4 percent between 2000 and 2020, with 70 percent of them generated withing the farm gate. Cattle and sheep meat account by most carbon dioxide emissions, with cattle averaging 50 times more than chicken. The emissions intensity of cereals is much lower, although rice emits more than five times than wheat and coarse grains. The rate of greenhouse gas emissions changes significantly across regions, reflecting large differences in efficiencies of production. For instance, the emissions intensity of cattle meat in Africa is almost four times as great as in Europe Article 1 of FAO’s constitution states that the Organization shall “collect, analyze, interpret and disseminate information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture, including forestry, fisheries and aquaculture”. Information such as that reviewed above, and found far more abundantly in the Statistical Yearbook, can help identify how and where to craft and implement initiatives with higher impact in terms of achieving the Four Better: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life – that lie at the heart of FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-2031.

- 4 Tips to create engaging press release titles
Press releases are an essential part of any PR strategy. They allow companies to get their message out quickly and effectively, reaching a broad audience. However, getting your message across to potential readers is just as important as the content of the press release itself. For that reason, it’s important to craft an engaging title for your press release that will capture the attention of readers and encourage them to click on your article. Read on to learn how you can make sure your press release makes an impact! Keep it short and sweet It’s no secret that people are more likely to skim than read when it comes to online content. So, when it comes to writing engaging press release titles, shorter is always better. Keep your titles short and sweet, and make sure they pack a punch by being interesting and keyword-rich. In addition to being short, your titles should also be attention-grabbing. Try to include keywords that will help your press release stand out in a search engine. And, of course, make sure your title accurately reflects the content of your press release. If you can do all of these things, you’ll be well on your way to writing engaging press release titles that will get results. Be clear and concise This may seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how many press releases have titles that are either too vague or too wordy. A good rule of thumb is to keep your title to one sentence and under 20 words. This way, your readers will know exactly what your press release is about and won’t get overwhelmed by a wall of text. Be creative The most important aspect of a good headline is that it’s creative. A headline that’s dull or unoriginal isn’t going to grab attention and persuade people to read on. To write a creative headline, start by brainstorming a list of potential ideas. Once you have a good selection of ideas, narrow them down by considering what would work best for your particular press release. Your creativity will often be determined by the subject matter of your press release. If you’re writing about a new product launch, for example, you’ll want to focus on headlines that highlight the product’s key features or benefits. If you’re writing about an event, on the other hand, you might want to focus on something that will make readers want to attend. Once you’ve settled on a general direction for your headline, it’s time to get creative with the wording. Use puns, jokes, or wordplay to add some personality to your headline and make it stand out from the rest. Just be careful not to go too over-the-top – remember, your goal is still to communicate information clearly and effectively. Use keywords Include relevant keywords in your press release title to help ensure that it is picked up by search engines. This will help people who are searching for information on your topic to find your press release more easily. Try to use keywords that are specific to your topic and that you think people will be searching for. Use numbers Using numbers or listicles in your press release titles can make them more eye-catching and engaging. For example, instead of saying “How to improve your website’s search engine ranking”, you could say “10 tips to improve your website’s search engine ranking”. The technique is used by this article, as you may already find out. Numbers indicate that the content is concise and informative, and readers will know exactly what they can expect to learn by reading the article. In addition, using numbers can help to break up long titles and make them easier to read.
- 7 Common Mistakes People Make With Press Release Distribution
A press release is a tool that can be used to effectively promote your business, product, or service. However, if not done correctly, a press release can do more harm than good. In this blog post, we will explore 7 of the most common mistakes made when distributing press releases. From sending them to the wrong people to using bad distribution services, we will cover everything you need to know in order to avoid making these critical errors. Sending Your Press Release to the Irrelevant Media The first step in getting your press release noticed is making sure you’re sending it to the right people. The media landscape is constantly changing, and what worked a few years ago may not work now. Make sure you’re familiar with the outlets that cover your industry and send your release to them. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is sending your release to irrelevant media outlets. If you’re in the tech industry, there’s no point in sending your release to a fashion magazine. Not only will they not be interested, but you’ll look like you don’t know what you’re doing. Do your research and send your release to the right people. It’ll save you time and increase your chances of getting coverage. Not Writing for Your Target Audience If you’re not writing for your target audience, then you might as well not bother distributing your press release at all. Your target audience is the people who are most likely to be interested in what you have to say, and if you’re not talking to them directly, then you’re wasting your time. Think about who you’re trying to reach with your press release. What kind of language will they understand? What information do they need from you? Write your press release with these things in mind, and you’ll be much more likely to get the attention of your target audience. Failing to Optimize Your Release for Search Engines If you’re not optimizing your release for search engines, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a process of making your website more visible in search engine results pages (SERPs). There are a number of factors that go into SEO, but one of the most important is keyword research. You need to identify the keywords that people are searching for when they’re looking for information about your business or product. Once you’ve identified the right keywords, you need to use them throughout your release, including in the headline, title, and body copy. Using relevant keywords will help search engines match your release to searchers’ queries, and that can lead to more traffic and exposure for your business. Using jargons in Your Release One mistake that can make your job even harder is using jargon in your release. Jargon is industry-specific language that can be confusing or off-putting to readers who are not familiar with your company or sector. Not only does using jargon make your release more difficult to understand, it can also make you appear out of touch or unprofessional. If you want your release to be read and remembered, keep the language simple and straightforward. Not Including a Call to Action If you’re not including a call to action in your press releases, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity. A call to action tells the reader what you want them to do next, and it can be a powerful way to drive conversions. Without a call to action, your press release is likely to be forgotten or ignored. Make sure you include a strong call to action at the end of your press release, and make it easy for readers to take the next step. Making Your Release Too Long If you want readers to ignore your press release, make it long. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing the attention of the media outlet or journalist you’re trying to reach. A press release should be around one to two pages at most, and include all of the essential information about your newsworthy story. If you start going on for pages and pages, chances are good that your press release will end up in the trash. So keep it concise and make sure every word counts! Not Having a Distribution Plan If you don’t have a plan for distributing your press release, you’re missing out on a crucial opportunity to promote your business. A well-crafted press release can be a powerful marketing tool, but only if it’s distributed properly. Without a distribution plan, your press release is likely to get lost in the shuffle, never to be seen by your target audience. There are a number of ways to distribute your press release, and the best way will vary depending on your goals and objectives. If you’re not sure where to start, consider working with a professional PR firm that specializes in press release distribution. They can help you create and execute a customized distribution plan that will maximize the reach and impact of your press release.

Place a pillow under your knees 3. Sleep on your side 4. Use a lumbar support pillow 5. See a doctor 1. Use a firm mattress Having a firm mattress is one of the best ways to relieve lower back pain while sleeping. A firm mattress supports your spine and keeps it in alignment, preventing any aches and pains you might experience while trying to get some rest. It also reduces pressure on the sensitive points in your back, which can lead to a more comfortable sleep. When shopping for a mattress, be sure to test it out by lying down on it for at least 10 minutes. This will allow you to feel how firm it is and if it’s right for you. You may want to buy a mattress topper to add extra support or cushioning if needed. 2. Place a pillow under your knees If you suffer from lower back pain while sleeping, one of the best ways to relieve the discomfort is by placing a pillow under your knees. Doing this helps to maintain the natural curvature of your spine, and relieves pressure on your lower back muscles. You can use a regular pillow, or a special orthopedic pillow designed to give extra support to the lower back area. Experiment with different positions and pillows until you find the one that gives you the most comfort. 3. Sleep on your side If you’re suffering from lower back pain while sleeping, one of the best things you can do is sleep on your side. Sleeping on your side can help reduce strain on your lower back and allow it to rest more comfortably. The best position for side sleeping is to draw your legs up slightly towards your chest and put a pillow between your knees. This will help keep your spine in alignment and provide extra support and cushioning. You should also make sure that your pillow is supportive and not too soft or thin. If you find that you’re still experiencing lower back pain while side sleeping, you may want to try placing a rolled-up towel under your waist or lower back for extra support. You may also want to invest in a memory foam mattress topper or a new mattress that is designed to relieve back pain. Experimenting with different sleeping positions and using cushions and pillows to provide extra support may be all it takes to get a good night’s sleep without the discomfort of lower back pain. 4. Use a lumbar support pillow If you suffer from lower back pain, it can be especially difficult to get a good night’s rest. The good news is, there are simple steps you can take to make sleeping more comfortable and reduce your back pain. One such step is using a lumbar support pillow while you sleep. A lumbar support pillow is specifically designed to provide extra cushioning and support to your lower back. It helps align your spine, reducing pressure on your back muscles and joints. Additionally, a lumbar support pillow can help promote proper posture while you sleep, leading to better overall health. When choosing a lumbar support pillow, look for one with adjustable straps that can be adjusted for your preferred level of firmness and comfort. You may also want to consider a lumbar support pillow with memory foam, which contours to the shape of your body and provides optimal support. Once you’ve found the right lumbar support pillow for you, it’s important to use it consistently throughout the night. Placing the pillow between your knees or at your lower back can help keep your spine in alignment, relieving back pain and allowing you to sleep more comfortably. By using a lumbar support pillow while you sleep, you can help reduce lower back pain and get a better night’s rest. 5. See a doctor Lower back pain can be a real burden, especially when it comes to sleeping. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to relieve your discomfort and help you get a good night’s rest. One of the best ways to relieve lower back pain while sleeping is to see a doctor. Seeing a doctor can help you identify the root cause of your pain and create a plan for managing it. Depending on your diagnosis, your doctor may suggest medications, physical therapy, or lifestyle modifications to ease your pain. They may also refer you to a specialist if necessary. Additionally, your doctor can advise you on what sleeping positions are best for you. Your doctor may recommend a supportive mattress, pillow, and posture that can reduce strain on your lower back while sleeping. In some cases, they may even provide or recommend specific medical equipment that can help relieve pressure and pain. In any case, seeing a doctor should be the first step you take when dealing with lower back pain while sleeping. A doctor can diagnose the underlying issue and provide treatment recommendations tailored specifically to your needs. Article Content [ hide ] The Truth About Back Pain and Desk Jobs Common Misconceptions About Back Pain The Real Causes of Back Pain How to Prevent Back Pain From Sitting at a Desk All Day The Truth About Back Pain and Desk Jobs Have you been suffering from back pain due to sitting at your desk all day? You’re not alone. The truth is, if you experience any type of discomfort while sitting at your desk, it’s important to be proactive in addressing it. Back pain is a common problem and can be managed with the proper preventive measures. Let’s start with understanding the cause of the pain. Many people assume that sitting for extended periods of time is the primary reason for their discomfort. However, research has found that posture and lack of movement are actually more significant factors than the amount of time spent sitting. The first step to preventing back pain is to ensure you have proper posture. Sitting up straight and keeping your spine in its natural curve are essential for keeping your back healthy. Additionally, make sure your chair is adjusted properly so that your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees are at hip-level or higher. This will help maintain the natural curvature of your spine. When sitting, it’s also important to get up and move around every 20 minutes or so. This can be done simply by taking a quick break to stretch or take a walk around the office. Making sure to stand up often and keep your body active will help reduce strain on your back. Finally, strengthening your core muscles can help prevent back pain. Doing exercises such as planks and crunches can help strengthen the muscles in your abdomen, which support the spine and help keep it healthy. It’s important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to managing back pain caused by desk jobs. However, with the right preventive measures, you can take control of your discomfort and stay productive. Common Misconceptions About Back Pain Back pain is a common problem that affects many people, and it’s often assumed that sitting at a desk all day is the cause. While sitting for long periods of time can be a contributing factor, there are several misconceptions about back pain and desk jobs that may surprise you. Here’s what you need to know about preventing and managing back pain from sitting at your desk all day. Misconception #1: Sitting Causes Back Pain The truth is that prolonged sitting isn’t necessarily the primary cause of back pain. The key is how you sit – how you position your body, how often you move, and how well you support your spine. Poor posture and lack of movement can increase the stress on your spine, leading to pain. Make sure to take regular breaks from sitting and adjust your chair height to ensure good posture throughout the day. Misconception #2: You Need a Standing Desk Although standing desks have become popular in recent years, they aren’t necessarily necessary to prevent back pain. As with sitting, it’s important to ensure that your posture is correct while standing and take regular breaks. Standing desks can help break up periods of sitting, but they’re not necessary to prevent back pain. Misconception #3: Exercise Makes Back Pain Worse Many people avoid exercise when they experience back pain, assuming that it will make it worse. However, studies have shown that staying active can be beneficial for people with lower back pain. Low-impact exercises like swimming and yoga can help strengthen the core muscles that support your spine, reducing the strain on your back. Misconception #4: Back Pain Is Inevitable You may feel like you’re doomed to suffer from back pain due to your desk job, but this isn’t necessarily true. While it’s true that prolonged sitting can lead to discomfort, there are steps you can take to prevent or manage it. By taking regular breaks, adjusting your chair height and posture, and engaging in low-impact exercise, you can reduce the risk of back pain and keep your spine healthy. The Real Causes of Back Pain Are you one of those people who spends their day sitting at a desk and feel they’re doomed to suffer from back pain? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us spend countless hours hunched over our desks and this can often lead to chronic back pain. The good news is that your desk job may not actually be the culprit. In fact, studies have shown that there are several other factors that are causing your back pain – and they can all be addressed with a few simple steps. How to Prevent Back Pain From Sitting at a Desk All Day Sitting at a desk all day can be incredibly uncomfortable, especially if it’s causing back pain. But there are a few simple steps you can take to help prevent back pain from sitting at your desk. Make sure your workspace is ergonomically correct. It’s important that your chair and desk are the right height for you. Your knees should be at a 90-degree angle and your feet should be flat on the floor. The top of your monitor should be at eye level, and your arms should be at a comfortable distance from the keyboard. Take regular breaks. Sitting in one position for too long can cause strain on your body. Try to get up and walk around at least once an hour. A few minutes of stretching can also be beneficial. Strengthen your core muscles. Having strong abdominal and back muscles will help you maintain good posture while sitting at your desk. Try to incorporate some core exercises into your daily routine. Invest in a comfortable chair. A good office chair should have adjustable lumbar support and be comfortable to sit in for long periods of time. It may also be helpful to use a footrest or cushion for extra support. By following these tips, you can help prevent back pain from sitting at your desk all day. Being mindful of your posture and taking regular breaks will make a world of difference! 7 Motivating Workout Tips to Get You Moving Back Pain: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment 5 Common Causes of Back Pain (and How to Treat Them) Are You Suffering from Mechanical Back Pain or Serious Back Pain? 5 Tips For Relieving Lower Back Pain While Sleeping #backpain #mechanicalbackpain #nonspecificbackpain #seriousbackpain
- 5 Common Causes of Back Pain (and How to Treat Them)
Back pain is an all-too-common complaint among many people. In fact, it’s estimated that up to 80% of adults in the United States will experience back pain at some point in their lives. While the causes of back pain can range from minor muscle strains to serious medical conditions, there are five common causes that contribute to the majority of back pain cases. In this blog post, we’ll explore the five most common causes of back pain, as well as the available back pain treatment options. Article Content [ hide ] 1. Poor Posture 2. Strained Muscles 3. Bulging or Ruptured Discs 4. Arthritis 5. Sciatica Verywell / Alexandra Gordon 1. Poor Posture Poor posture can be a major cause of back pain, especially if your job requires you to be sitting for long periods of time. Poor posture means that the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the spine and shoulders are being strained, which can lead to pain. To avoid this, it’s important to practice good posture when sitting or standing. When you’re sitting, make sure to keep your feet flat on the floor, your thighs parallel to the floor and your lower back supported. When you’re standing, keep your feet hip-width apart and use your core muscles to keep your spine in a neutral position. If you’re not sure what good posture looks like, take a look at some diagrams online or ask your doctor or physical therapist for help. To help reduce back pain caused by poor posture, it’s important to engage in regular exercise to strengthen your core muscles and improve your overall posture. Regular stretching can also help relax tight muscles and relieve tension in your back. If you are experiencing back pain, it’s best to speak to your doctor about treatment options that may work for you. 2. Strained Muscles Back pain is a common issue that affects many people. In many cases, it can be caused by strained or overworked muscles. When you put your body through too much activity, your muscles may become tense, weak, and sore. This can lead to severe pain in your back and shoulders. If you’ve been suffering from back pain due to strained muscles, there are several things you can do to help relieve the pain. First, it’s important to take some time to rest and give your body time to heal. Try to keep your activity levels low and find a comfortable position that won’t strain your muscles. Next, you can use cold and hot treatments. Alternating between a hot and cold compress can help reduce inflammation and ease the tension in your muscles. You can also take over-the-counter pain medications to help with the pain. If needed, you can also see your doctor for prescription strength medications or physical therapy treatments. Finally, you can try stretching exercises to help improve flexibility and decrease pain. Make sure to stretch gently and not overdo it. Yoga and Pilates classes can be great ways to learn how to perform stretches safely and effectively. By following these steps, you can help alleviate the pain from strained muscles and get back on track. 3. Bulging or Ruptured Discs One of the most common causes of back pain is bulging or ruptured discs. Discs are soft, gel-filled cushions between your vertebrae that act as shock absorbers when you move. When these discs become damaged, they can bulge out of place and press on nearby nerves, causing pain in your back. Treatment for a bulging or ruptured disc may include physical therapy, medications, and lifestyle changes such as avoiding heavy lifting and smoking cessation. Your doctor may also recommend surgery if the other treatments do not work. Physical therapy is often the first step in treatment, as it can help to strengthen your core muscles and relieve some of the pressure on your spine. Your physical therapist will teach you specific exercises to target the affected areas and provide pain relief. Medications may be prescribed to reduce inflammation, reduce nerve pain, or relax muscles. Common medications include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, and corticosteroids. If your doctor recommends it, they may also suggest taking over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Lifestyle changes can also make a big difference in managing your back pain. Activities such as lifting heavy objects or smoking can cause additional damage to your spine and should be avoided. Additionally, regular exercise can help to improve your overall posture and flexibility, which can help alleviate back pain. If the above treatments do not provide relief, your doctor may suggest surgery to repair the damaged discs. Surgery is usually only recommended when the pain is severe and other treatments have been unsuccessful. Whether you’re dealing with a bulging or ruptured disc, it’s important to talk to your doctor about the best treatment options for you. With the right combination of treatment options, you can manage your back pain and get back to living your life without discomfort. 4. Arthritis Arthritis is one of the most common causes of back pain. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis are all forms of arthritis that can affect the spine. Osteoarthritis, also known as wear-and-tear arthritis, is a degenerative joint condition that can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints of the spine. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that can lead to inflammation of the spine. Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis that affects the spine and other joints. Treatment for arthritis-related back pain typically includes a combination of medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Pain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and steroid injections may be used to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy can help strengthen the muscles around the affected joints, improving posture and mobility. Modifying activities to reduce stress on the spine, using lumbar supports, and engaging in regular exercise can also help relieve symptoms. 5. Sciatica Sciatica is one of the most common causes of back pain. It is a set of symptoms that is usually caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttocks and down the leg. The compression can be caused by irritation in the pelvis or piriformis muscle. Sciatica treatments vary depending on the cause and severity of the condition. Sometimes over-the-counter medications are all that’s needed for relief; these include NSAIDs, acetaminophen, or topical numbing cream. Other times, surgery may be necessary to remove an object causing pressure on the nerve or to release a tight muscle in your hip or buttock area. If you suspect you have sciatica, visit your doctor as soon as possible. 7 Motivating Workout Tips to Get You Moving Back Pain: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Are You Suffering from Mechanical Back Pain or Serious Back Pain? - Are You Suffering from Mechanical Back Pain or Serious Back Pain?
If you’re experiencing back pain, you may be wondering if it’s mechanical or serious. Mechanical back pain is usually caused by poor posture or overuse, while serious back pain can be the result of an underlying medical condition. In this blog post, we’ll explore the differences between mechanical and serious back pain so you can determine which type of pain you may be suffering from. Article Content [ hide ] Introduction What is Mechanical Back Pain? What is Serious Back Pain? How to Diagnose Your Back Pain When to Seek Help for Your Back Pain Conclusion Introduction Back pain is a common issue that can range from mild to severe, and can have many different causes. But when it comes to back pain, it’s important to understand the difference between non-specific, mechanical, and serious back pain. Knowing which type of back pain you’re dealing with can help you determine the best course of action to take in order to relieve your discomfort. In this post, we’ll discuss the three types of back pain and what you should do if you think you’re suffering from any of them. What is Mechanical Back Pain? Mechanical back pain is one of the most common types of back pain, and it affects millions of people each year. It occurs when there is a problem with the mechanics of the spine or its surrounding muscles and ligaments. This type of pain is usually characterized by an aching, stiffness, or radiating pain in the lower back that is often made worse with activities such as lifting or bending. The cause of mechanical back pain is usually the result of an underlying issue, such as an injury to the muscles or ligaments, poor posture, age-related wear and tear, obesity, or even a herniated disc. Fortunately, this type of pain is generally less severe than more serious back pain, such as sciatica or spinal stenosis. Mechanical back pain can usually be managed through a variety of treatments, including physical therapy, stretching, exercise, and rest. However, if you are experiencing severe or persistent back pain, it is important to see your doctor for a full diagnosis. Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may suggest additional treatment options such as medications, injections, or even surgery. What is Serious Back Pain? Serious back pain can be a sign of a more serious medical issue. It is important to be aware of the differences between non-specific, mechanical, and serious back pain in order to determine how to best address the issue. Serious back pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than 3 months and is caused by an underlying medical condition such as arthritis, cancer, or spinal stenosis. Serious back pain can also be caused by a traumatic injury such as a fracture or dislocation. The intensity of the pain may range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected area. If you are experiencing back pain that has lasted for more than 3 months, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and may order tests such as X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans to help diagnose the cause of your pain. Treatment for serious back pain can include medications, physical therapy, injections, and even surgery depending on the severity of the condition. It is important to understand the differences between non-specific, mechanical, and serious back pain in order to ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment for your condition. If you are experiencing any kind of back pain, it is important to seek medical advice to make sure that it is not serious. How to Diagnose Your Back Pain Back pain can be caused by a number of different issues, so it’s important to properly diagnose the type of back pain you are suffering from before attempting any treatment. This will help ensure that you get the most effective treatment and avoid potentially harmful treatments that won’t help your particular condition. There are three main types of back pain: non-specific, mechanical, and serious. Non-specific back pain is the most common and is generally characterized by discomfort that comes and goes over time. Mechanical back pain is caused by an underlying issue in your musculoskeletal system and may result in more persistent discomfort. Finally, serious back pain may indicate a more serious underlying problem and should be evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible. To determine which type of back pain you are suffering from, it’s important to evaluate your symptoms. Non-specific back pain is typically localized to the lower back or neck and is usually accompanied by stiffness or soreness that comes and goes over time. Mechanical back pain often occurs in the same area but may feel more persistent or intense than non-specific back pain. Serious back pain typically involves more intense and localized pain that may also be accompanied by numbness, tingling, weakness, or radiating pain in other areas of the body. If you are suffering from mechanical or serious back pain, it’s important to consult with a medical professional to get an accurate diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment. This could include physical therapy, medications, or even surgery depending on the severity of the issue. It’s always best to talk to a healthcare professional about your symptoms before attempting any self-treatment or over-the-counter remedies. When to Seek Help for Your Back Pain Back pain is a common complaint, but determining the cause and type of pain can be challenging. If your back pain is chronic or if it’s affecting your daily life, it’s important to understand the difference between non-specific, mechanical, and serious back pain. Non-specific back pain is pain that cannot be pinpointed to a specific cause, such as a trauma or underlying condition. It may be caused by muscle strain, poor posture, or repetitive activities. Mechanical back pain is caused by something moving improperly in the spine, such as arthritis, a herniated disc, or a degenerative spine condition. Serious back pain is caused by a medical condition such as cancer, infection, or nerve damage. If your back pain persists for more than a few days or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or numbness, it’s important to seek medical help. A doctor can diagnose your back pain and determine the best course of treatment. In some cases, back pain may be caused by an underlying medical condition and require medical intervention. In other cases, simple lifestyle modifications such as exercise and improved posture can alleviate the symptoms. Regardless of the type or severity of your back pain, it’s important to take care of your body. Speak with your healthcare provider if you’re concerned about your back pain and look into alternative treatments such as massage therapy and acupuncture. With proper care and treatment, you can reduce your back pain and get back to living your life. Conclusion If you’re suffering from back pain, it can be hard to know whether it’s a non-specific, mechanical, or serious issue. However, understanding the type of back pain you’re dealing with can help you get the right diagnosis and treatment. Non-specific back pain typically resolves itself after a few days with rest, but if the pain persists or is getting worse, it’s important to see your doctor for further evaluation. Mechanical back pain can often be treated with lifestyle changes and physical therapy. Serious back pain should always be investigated further by a medical professional, as it may indicate an underlying condition that requires medical attention. Understanding what type of back pain you’re dealing with can help ensure that you get the right treatment and care. It is often caused by bad posture, physical stress or injury, or even a medical condition. Back pain can range from mild to severe and can affect any part of the back, from the neck to the lower spine. There are many different types of back pain, including upper, middle, and lower back pain. Upper back pain is often associated with tightness in the shoulder and neck muscles, while lower back pain can be caused by issues such as herniated discs or sciatica. Middle back pain is typically caused by muscle strain, poor posture, or an injury. Regardless of where it’s located, back pain can be uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating. The good news is that there are a variety of treatments available to help relieve the pain and get you back on track. It’s important to talk to your doctor to figure out the best approach for you. What Causes Back Pain? Back pain can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from muscle strain to a slipped disc. Common causes of back pain include: an injury, such as a fall or overexertion; an inflammation of the spinal cord nerves; arthritis in the spine; or sciatica (pain that radiates down the leg). These conditions may require medical attention. How to Treat Back Pain Back pain can be a debilitating condition, but there are many ways to treat it. Some of the most common treatments for back pain include physical therapy, medications, injections, and rest. Physical therapy is an excellent way to reduce back pain by strengthening and stretching your muscles, improving posture, and increasing flexibility. Your therapist may also use techniques like massage or heat and cold therapy to relieve pain. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and muscle relaxants are commonly prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation. If your pain is severe or does not improve with these medications, your doctor may suggest injections. These may include corticosteroid injections, which help to reduce inflammation and provide relief from pain, or trigger point injections that target specific areas of your back. Finally, rest is often necessary to give your body time to heal. This can include taking breaks from work and activities that may exacerbate your back pain, such as prolonged sitting or standing. A doctor or physical therapist can help determine how much rest is necessary. When treating back pain, it is important to focus on both prevention and treatment. Exercising regularly and using proper posture can help you avoid future flare-ups. By following the advice of your doctor or physical therapist, you can find relief and help prevent the recurrence of back pain. When to See a Doctor If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms associated with back pain, it’s important to make an appointment with your doctor: Persistent pain for more than a few weeks Severe or worsening pain Pain that radiates down your legs Loss of bowel or bladder control Fever or other flu-like symptoms Unexplained weight loss If you experience any of the above symptoms, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and create a treatment plan that is best for you. They may recommend medications, physical therapy, or even surgery, depending on the severity of your condition. It is important to remember that back pain can be managed and often improved with early diagnosis and treatment. Prevention Preventing back pain is an important part of staying healthy and comfortable. While it can be hard to know exactly what causes your back pain, there are a few simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk of developing it in the first place. One way to reduce your risk of back pain is by exercising regularly. Regular exercise can help keep your muscles strong and flexible, which can help prevent strains and sprains that lead to back pain. Low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, and cycling are good options for people with chronic back pain. It’s also important to practice good posture. Good posture helps to evenly distribute your body weight throughout your spine, which can reduce strain on your muscles and joints. When sitting for long periods of time, make sure you have a supportive chair and remember to stand up and stretch often. Another way to reduce your risk of back pain is to maintain a healthy weight. Carrying excess weight can add additional strain on your spine, increasing your risk of developing back pain. Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help you maintain a healthy weight. Finally, it’s important to avoid activities that can cause back injuries, such as lifting heavy objects without using proper technique or engaging in contact sports without proper safety equipment. Being aware of your own limits and understanding when to take a break can also help reduce the risk of injury. By taking these simple steps, you can help prevent back pain and stay healthy and active. 7 Motivating Workout Tips to Get You Moving Cardiomyopathy: A Heart Condition You May Not Know About Are You Suffering from Mechanical Back Pain or Serious Back Pain?
